Therapeutic Photography and Well-Being in Autistic Youth

What’s this project about?

The current project goals are to inform how natural, built and social environments can maximize well-being in autistic youth and to identify how well-being can be improved on both physiological and psychological levels.

What does participating involve?

Participants will engage in four weeks of therapeutic photography, taking pictures of environments that contribute to their well-being, and journalling/speaking about why they took those photos with our research team. Participants will randomly be allocated to start therapeutic photography right away or will wait for 4-5 weeks before participation.  Based on the group allocation, they will also visit York University two or three time. The visits will include completing activities, filling out questionnaires about their mental health, and having their resting heart rate and breathing measured.

Who can be involved?

We are seeking autistic people ages 16-25 years to participate in this study. Support persons can provide assistance with participation, if needed.

What is the next step?

If you are interested in participating, please contact the researchers at York University (Dr. Jonathan Weiss, clinical lead) by email at taphoto@yorku.ca.
