Video Transcript – David Adedeji – Jamal Esmail Premji Nursing Scholarship Awardee

0:03 my name is David Adedeji and I am an

0:06 international student as well as a

0:08 nursing student here at York University.

0:10 I’m also in my final year of study

0:13 What drew me to the Jamal Esmail Premier

0:15 undergraduate scholarship was the

0:17 opportunity to attend a global Health

0:19 conference outside my comfort zone. The

0:23 conference I attended was a global

0:25 surgery conference in Vancouver. My

0:28 conference basically was about Global

0:30 surgery and how it affects underserved

0:31 communities. The scholarship has an

0:33 impact on Nursing education by providing

0:35 critical financial support and

0:38 professional development for students

0:39 like myself. It also allows us to gain

0:42 access to research, professional networks,

0:45 as well as knowledge beyond the

0:47 classroom. A pivotal experience for me

0:50 during the conference was learning about

0:52 creating and maintaining a sustainable

0:54 relationship. That for any sustainable

0:57 relationship to be good, it has to be built on

0:59 mutual trust.

1:00 So, something that this scholarship

1:02 did for me was, it gave me the avenue to

1:05 look at innovations that people have

1:07 done and look for a way to make mine come

1:10 to life, if that makes sense. So, a lot of

1:13 people have innovations but they lack

1:14 the medium to express their innovations.

1:17 And a key thing that the scholarship did

1:18 for me was it gave me the ability to

1:21 express my innovation to like-minded

1:25 people and get feedback as well.

1:27 Personally I’m going to make sure that

1:29 before I start any partnership, I’m going

1:32 to lay down my goals and lay down the

1:34 goals of the partner I’m trying to

1:36 collaborate with and make sure that we

1:38 are like-minded to make sure that we’re

1:40 not hitting off of each other, aligned

1:42 together basically. Scholarships like

1:44 this can help in creating global

1:46 leaders promoting nursing innovations,

1:49 as well as impacting or making a better

1:52 healthcare system. My advice to people

1:54 that want to follow my first step is

1:56 stay passionate and committed to your

1:59 goals. Seek out scholarships that align

2:01 with your interest and always apply

2:05 because if you apply you might get it,

2:0 7but if you don’t apply then you never

2:09 get it. So just apply. A quote I’m going

2:12 to leave you guys with is, always do your

2:14 best and leave the rest and you’ll be

2:17 fine.
