#YUSupportsNurses – Letter 6

Over 100 YorkU Nursing students thank front line nurses for their dedication to world health in the fight against COVID-19.

I am writing to you as a nursing student, in awe of the nurses like you who have come before me. It would be an understatement to say that you are a hero to me. It takes courage, compassion, and dedication to be doing what you are doing and are prepared to do during this pandemic we are facing. It is nurses like you who have inspired me to dig deep within myself to find the strength and love to choose this profession. Despite all the risks, despite all the fear, despite all the stresses that you must be under, you choose to keep caring and fighting for your patients. I aspire to be a nurse like you. I hope one day to have the bravery and dedication to the health of humanity as you do. Thank you for inspiring me to be a better person in order to one day become a nurse like you. Thank you for all that you do.

You are leading the care of thousands of people at this time. You are at the front lines, fighting for and helping as many as you can. Your advocacy and voice is being heard around the world. Your role as a leader in this pandemic is not being overlooked. Leading teams of other nurses, doctors, and respiratory therapists to provide care is inspiring. Nurses understand the intricacies of their patients in ways that no other profession can. The knowledge and insight you have about your patients will inform entire healthcare teams. You are carrying the torch for countless healthcare professionals who will follow your lead. Thank you for being a leader in this pandemic. Thank you for all that you do.

As a nursing student I have learned of the concept of client-centered care. Your role is now that of humanity-centered care. Now, during this dark time, you are the light that shines on humanity. You are helping our entire planet fight this pandemic. Through your compassionate care and knowledge, you are
bridging the gaps between countries, governments, families, doctors, and patients. You are at the center of this fight we are facing. Nurses allow for humanity to come together, and it is only together that we will overcome this time. It is not an easy role you are taking on, so thank you for doing it. Thank you for all that you do.

I want to finish off by reminding you to take care of yourself. Nurses give so much of themselves in caring for others but tend to forget about themselves. You deserve to feel okay, to be healthy, to feel whole. I care about you. We all care about you. Thank you for everything. I will be thinking of you.

Sincerely,

G.T., York University Nursing student
