#YUSupportsNurses – Letter 7

Over 100 YorkU Nursing students thank front line nurses for their dedication to world health in the fight against COVID-19.

As a nursing student, I cannot put into words the admiration and pride I feel about the heroism nurses are currently exemplifying all around the world. Your work is truly immeasurable. The nursing profession is on the frontlines of this raging war against COVID-19, and your sacrifice and commitment to helping people in need, despite the risks that you put yourself and your loved ones under, is exactly why I am striving to become a nurse. You are the real heroes. Seeing all the daily news stories profiling nurses and what they are doing to save lives just reaffirms why I chose nursing.

I am glad that nurses are being perceived as leaders during this horrible pandemic because you guys are the most qualified of anyone. Nurses persevere through unquantifiable stress and hardship in order to do what they love; they are caring and empathetic people at their core. During a stressful global event such as this, it is the authenticity expressed by nurses that people look to and appreciate, not the stories that the media or politicians like to promote; it is the selfless actions of people like you that speak loudest. This comfort and reassurance are what I believe the general public need the most right now. Your leadership encourages me to be a better person and develop these skills for my own future practice.

As nursing students, we learn a lot about client-centered care and how this is a focal point for nursing practice. However, you are not just taking care of a few patients; you are saving the lives of an entire nation. There may not be a cure for COVID-19 yet, but I would say nurses are the closest thing to one. Thank you for all your effort, sacrifice, and being the healthcare bridge between doctors, patients, and families involved in this pandemic. I could not have asked for a greater role model in this noble profession.

Take Care and Keep Safe,

B.M., York University Nursing student
