Psychology BSc: Program Map

1st Year

Your first year in the BSc in Psychology would likely include courses related to the Psychology major, General Education courses meant to offer breadth in your studies, and courses outside the major in sciences and math.  A full time course load would be five classes in the Fall and Winter semester, but some students may choose to take less than five courses.  When you enroll, you will have the opportunity to choose a schedule that works best for you, but you can get an idea of how a university schedule might look by viewing this sample schedule.

Major Courses

  • HH/PSYC 1010: Introduction to Psychology

General Education Courses

  • 1 full year course at the 1000 level in an approved humanities (This course might be in literature, language, culture, history, etc.)
  • 1 full year course at the 1000 level in approved social science (This course might be in politics, power, equity, societal change, etc.)

Courses Outside Major

  • 1 full year from approved science courses (This course might be biology, chemistry, physics, etc.)
  • 1 full year course from approved math courses (This course might be calculus, algebra, etc.)

Beyond 1st Year

In addition to the required Psychology courses below, you will also choose general education courses and courses outside of your major beyond your first year.

  • HH/PSYC 2010: Writing in Psychology
  • HH/PSYC 2020: Statistical Methods I and II
  • HH/PSYC 2030: Introduction to Research Methods
  • 1 half year course at the 2100 level in Psychology such as Social Psychology, Developmental Psychology or Personality
  • 1 half year course at the 2200 level in Psychology such as Sensation and Perception, Biological Basis of Behaviour, Motivation, or Cognition
  • 1 additional half year course at the 2100 or 2200 level in Psychology
  • 3 half year courses at the 3000 level in Psychology such as Abnormal Psychology, Health Psychology, or Psychology and Law
  • HH/PSYC 4180: Critical Thinking in Psychology
  • 2 half year courses at the 4000 level in Psychology such as Personality Theory and Behaviour Disorders, Counselling Psychology, or Theories of Human Nature
