Yes, you can select up to two preferred residences on your request. While Housing & Conference Services will make every effort to accommodate your preferences, we cannot guarantee your specific choices. Most students base their residence preferences on their Faculty and campus study program. Rest assured, all residences will provide you with a great experience as you transition to university life!
Absolutely! Our residence community is a wonderful mix of first-year and upper-year students. If you're considering staying in residence during your upper years, you can re-apply as long as you meet all of the following requirements:
- You are continuously enrolled in a full-time degree program.
- Have no behavioural infractions while living in or visiting York residence.
- Have no outstanding debt to the University.

Residences at Glendon offer traditional-style accommodations with single and double rooms sharing a community bathroom. Each community bathroom includes private shower rooms and shared sinks. Additionally, a limited number of semi-private and private suites are available. Adapted housing options are also offered at Hilliard Residence.
First-year students are encouraged to experience living in a traditional residence with a roommate. It’s a fantastic way to meet other students, socialize, and make lasting friendships. Additionally, you will enjoy the convenience of a dining plan. Traditional-style residence is our most affordable option, with cleaning services provided in common areas and washrooms.
Suite-style residences are a suitable choice for upper-year students who prefer independence, sharing amenities, and cooking and cleaning for themselves.
Housing will make every effort to accommodate everyone’s residence preferences, but we cannot guarantee specific assignments, as they depend on availability.
The average room size is 110 square feet and is furnished with a single/twin-sized bed, lamp, desk, chair, dresser, closet and garbage bin. Students supply their own linens or may purchase linens through York University's external partner Residence Linens prior to arrival and they will be shipped to the housing office and ready for when you arrive.
Yes, each room has wireless and wired internet connection.
Most first-year students will be sharing a double room. Students are typically assigned with roommates of the same gender. The residence application lists specific questions about your lifestyle preferences which will be used to match your compatibility with potential roommates. To ensure optimal compatibility and harmonious roommate relations, we suggest you answer the questions thoroughly and honestly.
Students who have confirmed double spaces (offered, accepted, and paid deposit) within the same residence will have the opportunity to select a roommate. Applying around the same time and by June 3 will increase your chances of being placed with your chosen roommate.
Most residences are mixed-gender, but we also offer some floors/sections designated as female-or male-only floors. You can indicate a preference for a same-gender floor/section on the application.
Your residence occupancy is effective for the fall and winter academic terms but excludes the winter holiday closure period when the residences are closed. Students are required to make alternative living arrangements during the closure period but students who live out-of-province may appeal to stay in residence if they have no alternative accommodation and will be charged a standard holiday closure fee if they are approved.
The undergraduate residence contract commences on your check-in date. Guidelines for move-in will be posted on residence move-in information in August. Move-out is 24 hours after the student completes their F/W term classes and/or exams or Sat. April 26, 2025 at 12:00 p.m., whichever is earlier.

No, all residences are smoke-free. Smoking is also strictly prohibited within 9 metres of the building entrance.
Rules and policies on cannabis smoking, possession and cultivation are available in residence community standards.
Residents are encouraged to contact their residence life coordinator on all smoking and cannabis concerns they may have. Issues will be addressed with responsible residents in accordance to policies set in the residence occupancy agreement and residence life handbook.
We suggest you budget about $13,300 to 15,700 to cover your residence and food costs for the eight-month period, not including personal spending money. Please refer to the website for information about undergraduate residence rates.
In addition to your room and meal costs, all students are required to pay an $80 residence life fee. You may incur additional costs if you wish to subscribe to phone and cable TV. Students are strongly recommended to get content insurance as the University is not responsible for loss or damage of personal property for any reason.
The purchase of a dining plan is mandatory in all traditional residences where cooking facilities are not provided. Students may rent or bring compact refrigerators from our external partner Coldex to keep in their room. Students living in suites with kitchen access may purchase optional dining plans. Campus features a main dining hall that offers a wide variety of food options, including salads, soups, sandwiches, full 'home-style' dinners, fast food, international cuisine, as well as halal options. Additionally, there are other food outlets as well as, food and beverage vending services that operate during the academic year.
Nearly 430 students live on-campus at Glendon in two different undergraduate residence buildings. A complimentary shuttle service connects you to York's main campus, Keele, where over 2,000 students reside in undergraduate housing.
Absolutely! Each residence has residence dons, who will lend a helping hand during your transition to university life and will be your resource during your time in residence. Residence dons report to a live-in professional residence life coordinator, who is fully trained to manage simple to complex residents’ concerns.
