FAQs – York Apartments Lease Renewals

As of August 2020, York Apartments residents are assigned a term lease with an end date. Each year thereafter, the leases are renewed pending resident’s eligibility (full-time status and financial standing with the University) at the time of review. Residents with leases that are up for renewal are contacted at least three (3) months prior to lease expiry and offered the extension for the following year.

No, if you have intentions of extending your stay in residence and continue to be eligible, you will be offered a renewal three (3) months before your lease expires. Upon renewal, you will be asked to sign a new N11 that will expire the following year.

If you continue to be eligible for residence (in full-time studies and good financial standing with the University, you will be offered a lease renewal three (3) months before your lease expire and will be asked to sign a new N11 Agreement to Terminate Tenancy that will expire the following year.

Upon lease renewal offer, you may discuss this with Housing, and agree on a move-out date different than the lease expiry. Once agreed, you will be requested to sign an N11 Agreement to Terminate Tenancy that will be marked non-rescindable.

You may contact apstatus@yorku.ca and alter the vacate date on your N11 Agreement to Terminate Tenancy . This must be done at least sixty (60) days prior to your new move-out date.

It is an important lease requirement to maintain eligibility (full-time students standing). If you are graduating months before your lease expiry, you must make plans to vacate on the end of the month of your graduation or last day of classes. You must notify Housing at least two (2) months/sixty (60) prior to your move-out. For example, your last day of classes is on January 10, 2025 you must contact Housing on or before November 1, 2024, and finalize your new N11 Agreement to Terminate Tenancy for a move out date of January 31, 2025.
