Social Insurance Number (SIN) is a nine-digit number used in the administration of various Canadian government programs.
You will require a SIN to work in Canada or to receive government benefits such as tax credit(s). If you do not already have one, you will need to obtain a SIN as soon as possible after arriving in Canada. A SIN is required for payroll, benefits, and health insurance.
It is unique to you and should not be shared with unauthorized personnel. Failure to obtain a SIN will result in non-payment of salary, including benefits.
NOTE: Temporary residents who are not Canadian Citizens or permanent residents are given SINs that start with the number 9. A SIN will be valid until the end of the authorized stay in Canada, as determined by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada.
Applying for a Social Insurance Number
Temporary workers and new permanent residents will need to apply for a SIN through Service Canada. You will need to complete an application form, which can be downloaded from their website. There is no fee for new applications or to change the expiry date on a temporary SIN. When applying you will need to provide documentation proving your identity, status in Canada (e.g., work permit or confirmation of permanent residence letter).
All documents submitted must be originals written in English or French.
Please provide your York administrator with a copy of the SIN letter and the expiry date (if applicable) within your first day or two at York.
Please visit https://www.canada.ca/en/employment-social-development/services/sin.html for more details.
NOTE: When renewing your work permit, please remember to also renew your SIN card. If you have a work permit and then gain permanent residence status, you must apply for a permanent SIN.
