Jean Monnet Lecture Series Presents ‘The Paris Climate Agreement: Prospects for the global climate effort’

Special presentation on the Paris Agreement reached at COP 21 United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC)

On December 12, 2015, parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) reached an agreement on climate change. The Paris outcome is an important turning point. It opens an entirely new path for the future of the global climate effort.

This talk provides a critical overview of the climate negotiations before and during the Paris Conference, outlining the central themes and the negotiation process. In reviewing what makes the Paris Agreement distinctive, the presentation will identify the promises it holds and the challenges it will face in the process of facilitating a fair and effective transition toward low-carbon and climate resilient societies. The talk will close with streamlined guidelines, and research objectives, on what remains to be done to meet these challenges.
