York University’s School of Public Policy and Administration will host its annual lecture and reception on March 2, and presents Dr. Bert Lauwers, a physician, who will speak on “Why Good Government Means Good Healthcare Policy.”
Lauwers, president and CEO of the Ross Memorial Hospital in Lindsay as of January 2015, graduated from York’s Master of Public Policy, Administration and Law (MPPAL) program in October 2014.
He is appointed as a member of the Provincial Physicians’ Leadership Council of the Ontario Hospital Association (OHA), is a member of the Central East Executive Committee of the Local Health Integration Network (LHIN), and is chair of the Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD) Working Group.
Lauwers joined the Ross Memorial Hospital as vice-president, Medical in June 2013, and in January 2014, he added the chief of staff role to his vice-president Medical portfolio. He led the Ross Memorial Hospital in developing its new strategic plan for 2015 to 2021 and in preparing for its accreditation survey. The hospital was awarded the highest possible accreditation standing, accredited with exemplary standing, achieving a score of 99.6 per cent.
Lauwers is the former deputy chief Coroner-Inquests for the Office of the Chief Coroner in the Province of Ontario, and former deputy chief Coroner-Investigations and Chair of the Deaths Under Five and the Paediatric Death Review Committee. He is a graduate of the University of Toronto Medical School and is appointed as an assistant clinical professor (adjunct) in the Faculty of Family Medicine at McMaster University. He is a former president of the Ontario Coroners Association.
