LA&PS Professor Kean Birch makes case for ‘firm regulation’ of AI in Toronto Star op-ed

In an op-ed piece published by the Toronto Star on January 13, 2020, LA&PS Professor Kean Birch explores the implications of artificial intelligence (AI) and the need for proactive regulation that explores its potential impacts.

Countering the market-based policy of “agile governance” when it comes to the manner in which AI is implemented in society and everyday life, Birch challenges the notion that we can simply adapt to this technology without fully understanding it.

“We as individuals and a society, are supposed to to adapt to the emerging AI technologies that we don’t understand, and aren’t even expected to bother understanding,” Birch states.

“Instead of this state of affairs, we need a more nuanced approach to emerging AI technologies in order to understand how they’re going to reconfigure our societies, yes, but also how our societies configure these technologies in our our image.”
