We’re taking you back in time as long-time members of our community share with us their fondest memories from their York University journey. This is LA&PS Through the Ages.

Our first feature is Christine Gooljar, an Administrative Coordinator, in the Department of Philosophy, who began her York University career 20 years ago. She reflects on her career at the University and shares the growth and changes she has experienced in her years here.

When did you first join the York University community and what was your role?

I first started out in the Registrar’s office as a Records Clerk for graduate transcripts in 1999.

How has your journey at York University helped you grow as an individual?

Simply put, York has been my saviour! When I started working at York back in 1999, I was lost and confused about what I wanted to do in life. I became a single mother of 9-month-old twins and needed to find my way fast.  Thankfully, my mother worked at York and eventually was able to get me a job here as a casual worker.
I worked hard and was able to get into York with a full-time permanent position in September of  2000. Working at York allowed me to provide a stable life for my children because it provided me with a stable life. Being at York has helped me grow into a strong, independent, reliable, honest and fair woman. I’ve always had these strengths but my experiences working in different areas and departments over the past 20 years has only strengthened my skills. I am very proud of the person I have become.

What inspires you at work each day?

My colleagues inspire me — and over my many years at York, they’ve come to be my extended family. Sure, we’ve faced hard times as a team, but it only makes our achievements that much more special.  I look forward to coming to work

What has been the most memorable moment of your York University journey?

I’ve had far too many memorable moments to just pick one, but I can say without a doubt that my move to the Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies was one of my happiest moments. My past department was closing and although this was a tough time in my York experience this change forced me to go beyond my comfort zone and explore the University.  I was eventually offered a position in the Department of Philosophy. When I received the news that I had a new home in Philosophy, I replied to my HR advisor in tears. What a memorable moment that was!

How have you seen the University evolve since beginning your career here?

My mother worked at York, which means I basically grew up on York University grounds. As a child, I used to come here for summer camp with my brothers while my mother was at work. I experienced the Olympic sized pool, the beautiful grounds and the amazing Scott Library. So, I can most definitely say there have been many changes over the past 45 yrs.
