Moving Forward webinar series in LA&PS offers more opportunities for engagement in 2021 | Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies (LA&PS)

The COVID-19 pandemic will not stop us from engaging with our community. This is the commitment of the Dean’s Office in the Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies (LA&PS). Six new interactive webinars have been scheduled for the Winter term, the latest episodes in the Faculty’s Moving Forward series.

Launched in September 2020, the Moving Forward series invites students, alumni, faculty, staff and other friends of York into meaningful conversations about how to “move forward” in uncertain times. Moving Forward resonated with our community, drawing hundreds of participants in 2020. To view past episodes visit the YouTube playlist.

Moving Forward continues with six webinars for the Winter term

Each Moving Forward webinar engages successful York alumni for a unique take on progress, drawing on one of three sub-themes:

how organizations are moving forward in response to the global COVID-19 pandemic;
how our communities and organizations are moving forward on issues of equity and social justice; and
how students can move forward in their academic and career goals, through guidance from alumni who are graduates of the same program.

How Entrepreneurs Overcome Adversity – Jan. 28, 12 to 1 p.m.

Five successful York grads will talk about their entrepreneurship journey, and specifically how to overcome adversities including financing a start-up, time management, and navigating the pandemic. Panelists include: Anil Taneja, managing director at Palm Holdings; Matt Golden, founder and managing partner at Golden Ventures; Noora Sharrab, co-founder and CEO at Sitti Social Enterprise; Richard Reiner, founding partner at CC Stratus Capital; and Sharon Zohar, CEO/founder at The Big Push. My English degree: what a great decision! – Feb. 4, 2 to 3:30 p.m.

Hear from graduates of York’s Department of English who are currently in leadership roles as they share their career journeys. Panelists include: Kirsten Manley-Casimir, acting legal director, Indigenous justice division at Ministry of the Attorney General; Lena Azzou, chief of staff at Metrolinx; Michael Pavkovic, vice-president – payments and trade operations at RBC; and Tamer Ibrahim, youth collective impact manager at Laidlaw Foundation. How York alumni are advancing initiatives in Black communities – Feb. 9, 12 to 1 p.m.

York University alumni Jay Singer led Discount Car & Truck Rentals through the brunt of the COVID-19 pandemic in early 2020. Women in Leadership – March 8, 1 to 2 p.m.

Hear from York alumnae who are currently in leadership roles as they share their career journeys. This webinar will talk about what inspires these women leaders, how they have overcome obstacles along their career paths, and more.
