Welcome to LA&PS Through the Ages, where, each month, we talk to longtime members of the LA&PS community about how they got to York University, what their roles are like and even some of their fondest York memories.
This month’s post is all about Diklah Frishman, a Communication & Website Assistant. A lover of film and television, Frishman turned her affection for the creative industry into a full-time gig after graduating from York University with a degree in communications. She’s now the creative force behind the Department of Communication & Media Studies. Course promo videos, newsletters, social media, department websites – she’s had a hand in it all.
When did you first join the York University community?
I first came to York in 2001 with YUTA (York University Temporary Agency). I held various contract positions, but my role with the ABEL program (Advanced Broadband Enabled Learning) in 2008 was when my career at York really launched.
What’s it like being a Communication & Website Assistant?
In my role, I work on a variety of creative projects which support our students as well as the department. Maintaining our websites, managing the Communication & Media Studies social media accounts, shooting and editing videos, writing newsletters, designing posters — I have a hand in it all. Life of a Communication & Website Assistant is never boring; each day is a new adventure. I have a love for media of all kinds, so I really enjoy that I’m able to work within this space and create content that makes an impact.
What sparked your interest in working at York University?
I’m a proud York University alumna. I earned Honours Bachelor’s degrees in English and Communication Studies and had such a wonderful experience that I wanted to stick around after graduation. I made so many lifelong memories and friends during my undergraduate years, so York is a very special place for me.
What’s an experience or accomplishment that you’re most proud of?
When I worked in the Department of Social Science as their Communication & Website Assistant, the position was brand new, so I had the exciting opportunity to shape the role. I was able to be part of some really interesting projects, such as an expansive website redesign, and work with a wonderful group of people.
Now a fun question! What do you like to do outside of the office?
When I’m not at work, I love to spend quality time with my family and go for relaxing walks. As a media-lover, I also enjoy going to the movies (now that we can again).
