York Professor in Sociology, Marcello Musto’s research focuses on mobilizing critical thinking and scholarly knowledge to combat growing economic and political crises of contemporary social life. His SSHRC-funded project ‘Alternative Socio- Economic Ideas’ aims to explore the contemporary relevance of social, economic and political alternatives to present-day capitalism.
“There is a growing global consensus about the need to rethink the dominant organizing logic of contemporary society and develop solutions to advance economic justice and social change,” explains Professor Musto who is also leading another SSHRC- supported project on “The Global History of Karl Marx’s Capital”. Through partnered research, this project will identify key dynamics that have produced and sustained political and social movements inspired by Marx.
Prof. Musto is also the founding director of the Laboratory for Alternative Theories at York. This laboratory brings together contemporary research in the fields of sociology, social and political theory, and political economy, with the aim of exploring themes such as social classes and inequality, public/private ownership, financial crises, ecology, globalization, and migration .
