Five York University researchers from the Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies received funding of $422,065 from the Social Sciences & Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC). The funding was for the September 2021 Aid to Scholarly Journals competition.
Scholarly Journals grants are meant to increase dissemination, discoverability and readership of original research results in the social sciences and humanities through Canadian scholarly journals. These grants are meant to support the critical knowledge mobilization goals of the research.
“The role of scholarly journals is critical to the advancement academic research and collaboration,” said J.J. McMurtry, dean of the Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies. “This funding will enable us to amplify our overall research impact.”
Leveraging significant federal investments in digital scholarly publishing infrastructure, these grants assist journals with taking advantage of digital innovations and transitioning to open access models of publishing. The grant applications are evaluated through a single-stage committee review process and all Aid to Scholarly Journals adjudication committees are multidisciplinary.
“The considerable work involved in editing and publishing scholarly journals is something that is not well accounted for in academia” said Ravi de Costa, Associate Dean Research and Graduate of LA&PS. “This funding program responds to that lack and so these successes are very welcome indeed.”
