As you may know, Professor Adrian Smith, Director of the Global Labour Research Centre (GLRC), will be on sabbatical from July 2024 to June 2025. We are pleased to announce that Carlo Fanelli, Associate Professor in the Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies, has accepted to take on the role of GLRC's Interim Director.  

Carlo Fanelli is an Associate Professor of Work and Labour Studies in the Department of Social Science and appointed to the Graduate Programs in the Department of Politics and the Department of Sociology. Since 2009, he has been editor-in-chief of Alternate Routes: A Journal of Critical Social Research published by Athabasca University Press. 

Professor Fanelli is currently a member of the GLRC's Executive Committee and has research and teaching experience in the areas of work and labour market restructuring, labour and employment law, public policy, political economy and social inequality. Notably, he brings a wealth of experience in interdisciplinary and comparative research to the GLRC. Some of his recent projects explore (i) how austerity has impacted public finances, services and workers in Canada and how these experiences differ and/or share parallels internationally, (ii) the emergence of global ‘living wage’ movements and (iii) the ‘right to disconnect’ and ‘gig’ work.   

Beyond conducting research, Professor Fanelli engages in public debates, with media contributions encompassing a variety of media outlets such as The Toronto StarThe Globe and MailThe HiIl Times, the Financial PostHuman Resources Director Magazine, BlogTO and CTV news, among others.
