Social Work grad launches healthcare business to help seniors

Social Worker Kristal Lewis returned to York University to bring her business, Senior Care Connect, to life. Lewis graduated with a bachelor’s (’07) and master’s degree (’08) from the School of Social Work in the Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies.

Senior Care Connect, as described in StartUp Here Toronto, helps aging patients find the healthcare services they need. The idea for the company was born through Lewis’s experience working in the hospital industry and liaising between families and the resources available outside the public healthcare system.

When it was time to see her business come to fruition, Senior Care Connect co-founder Taiwo McGregor circled them back to York U, specifically to the university’s entrepreneurship program called LaunchYU. Last year Senior Care Connect joined AccelerateUp, the four-month, intensive arm of LaunchYU. With AccelerateUp, entrepreneurs are supported as they build, launch and scale their ventures.

Since then, Lewis and McGregor have created a beta program where users can search a variety of care options, such as services related to dementia, help with bathing and more.
