DARE Project: COVID-19 and the World of Work: Workers' Voices Interview Series
Program(s) of Study: Indigenous Studies and French
Project Supervisor: Luann Good Gingrich
Narratives such as the ones we collected during this research project are fantastic educational resources. My goal after university is to become an elementary school teacher, and I think that adapting this research experience to the classroom will help our youth to better understand work and labour.
Project Description:
The Global Labour Research Centre (GLRC) promotes the study of work, employment and labour at York University. As COVID-19 has exposed longstanding inequalities by race, class, gender, physical ability, etc. in the labour market, the GLRC has initiated a broad research response titled “COVID-19 and the World of Work,” that includes a research database, research briefs, blog posts, events, and more. The student will join the initiative of the “Workers’ Voices” interview series, a recent addition to the “COVID-19 and the World of Work” umbrella. The purpose of this qualitative research project (narrative approach) is to highlight voices from unionized and non-unionized workers in Canada and around the world, to give witness to the story of how COVID-19 has impacted their work and livelihood. We anticipate that this will be initiated in February or March 2021, following ethical approval. With support from Dr. Luann Good Gingrich (GLRC Director) and Dr. Ethel Tungohan (GLRC Executive), two students (one undergrad and one grad student) will pilot and refine the interview guide, and begin the recruitment and interview process. The DARE student will continue with the project that was initiated in the spring. They will conduct remote interviews, transcribe the interviews, and prepare a narrative account for each worker interview for publication on our COVID-19 blog. The student is anticipated to conduct and publish one interview every 2-3 weeks. The Dean’s Award for Research Excellence (DARE) – Undergraduate enables our students to meaningfully engage in research projects supervised by LA&PS faculty members.
