DARE Project: A history of the Toronto Greek Canadian press, 1958-1980s

By closely reading several Greek language newspapers published in Toronto between the 1960s and 1980s, I learned about the main topics and issues that they addressed, including dictatorship and the Greek community in Canada.
Project Description:
Since the late 1950s several Greek Canadian newspapers were published in Toronto. Until their eventual decline in the 1990s onwards when other sources of information such as Greek television stations and the internet became available to Greek Canadian homes, newspapers served as the main source of information for Greeks in Canada and one of the main conduits of information on Canadian politics and society, particularly among those with a basic knowledge of English. The DARE student will contribute to a project focused on a close reading of several Greek-language newspapers that were published in Toronto and circulated widely between 1958 (the year when the first Greek-language newspaper was published) and 1980s. This close analysis of the Greek-language newspapers will advance the goals, objectives and mandate of the Greek Canadian History Project. The DARE project and the work proposed to be undertaken will fill this gap and advance our research agenda considerably and support future public history events, courses and research findings.The Dean’s Award for Research Excellence (DARE) - Undergraduate enables our students to meaningfully engage in research projects supervised by LA&PS faculty members.
