DARE Project: Venezuelan Migration in Latin America and the Caribbeans: A Review
Program(s) of Study: Criminology
Project Supervisor: Yvonne Su
I hope this research can provide insights into the dynamic flow of migration and its impacts on host countries, as well as inspire more nuanced and informed approaches to migration policy and discourse.
Project Description:
Over the past decade, 7.7 million Venezuelans have left their country due to violence, insecurity, threats, and shortages of food, medicine, and essential services. Among these, 85% have fled to neighbouring countries. This research project conducts a systematic review of academic literature, grey literature, and policy documents related to Venezuelan migration in Latin America. The review aims to enhance understanding of the nature of this migration flow, the factors influencing the complex decision-making processes behind regional and circular mobility, and the long-term consequences of innovative regional responses by host countries. Additionally, the project seeks to explore how the use of social media impacts migration, representation, and global narratives surrounding Venezuelan migrants. The Dean’s Award for Research Excellence (DARE) – Undergraduate enables our students to meaningfully engage in research projects supervised by LA&PS faculty members.
