DARE Project: First Steps for Building a New Canadian Book Publishing Press
Program(s) of Study: Professional Writing
Project Supervisor: Matthew Bucemi
By integrating the press into the Book Publishing stream of the Professional Writing program at York University, I hope it will offer students the chance to help pioneer an untapped market with significant potential in Canada.
Project Description:
Our project focused on identifying best practices for creating an independent publishing house and how we can carve out a place for our own version of science fiction and fantasy genre literature in the current market. I researched available funding, budget considerations, and the state of the Canadian publishing industry. I also read relevant science fiction and fantasy books that explore the world condition through a speculative lens, which reflect the vision for the press. I simultaneously tested my research findings and theories against knowledgeable professionals in the industry by engaging in discussions, adapting the creative mandate and business plan with my supervisor. The Dean’s Award for Research Excellence (DARE) – Undergraduate enables our students to meaningfully engage in research projects supervised by LA&PS faculty members.
