Tom Janes Award for Black Scholars – Mar 2, 2023
On March 2, 2023, we celebrated the 2021 recipients of the Tom Janes Award for Black Scholars. The recipients were 10 first-year Black students enrolled in a LA&PS program, who were selected by the Advisory Committee to the Special Advisor on the Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies’ Anti-Black Racism Strategy. The Tom Janes Award for Black Scholars is one of six new donor-funded awards for Black students announced by LA&PS’ Advancement team in 2021.
Undergraduate Black Student Lounge ribbon-cutting – Feb 16, 2023
Faculty, staff and students joined us for the official ribbon-cutting of 051 McLaughlin lounge, the newly designated study space for LA&PS undergraduate Black students. This space is the first of its kind for LA&PS undergraduate Black identified students to meet, connect, create, network, and study. The aim of this space is to accommodate the changing needs of the present and future students while honoring those who came before.
Black Graduate Students Meet & Greet – Nov 17, 2022
LA&PS Black inclusion advisor, Professor Paul Lawrie hosted an evening with graduate students to discuss the Faculty’s ongoing strategy to address anti-Black racism and better ways in which the Faculty can be more inclusive. Professor Lawrie spoke to students about their personal experiences at York, as well as their hopes and expectations. This was the first of many out-reach events planned by Professor Lawrie.
