Field Placement Coordinator, University of Guelph-Humber
Social Work, Bachelor of Social Work (BSW)

Why did you decide to be a Social Worker?

I always knew I had a passion for helping others. Upon completing the Social Service Worker program at Humber College and gaining experiences in the field, I knew I wanted to further my studies and complete my graduate degree in social work.

Social work allows me to do what I love, to show compassion and empathy to others.

Can you tell me about your social work journey and how it has led you to your current position?

In 2015 I graduated from the Social Service Worker program at Humber College. After working for a year, I decided to go back to school and applied for the BSW program at York University. In my fourth year, I completed my practicum at Humber College working in the part-time SSW program. After completing my placement, I was offered a position as the Program Coordinator of the part-time SSW program and held the position for a few months. While working in the SSW department, an opportunity at the University of Guelph-Humber became available which led me to my current position as Field Placement Coordinator for the Family and Community Social Services degree program.

In 2020, I completed my master’s degree in Social Work at York University which focused on Youth mentoring programming and how well they address the structural barriers faced by Black and Indigenous youth in Ontario.

Upon completing my Masters in 2021, I accepted a new position at Humber College as the Coordinator, student Diversity and Inclusion Initiative for The Black Student Support and Engagement Centre.

Where do you work, what’s your job title, and can you provide a little information about what a typical work week is like for you?

I am the Program Coordinator for the Black Student Support and Engagement Centre (BSSE) at Humber College.

My typical work week involves overseeing both BSSE centres at both Humber’s North and Lakeshore campuses. In my position, I plan and implement programming for Black identifying learners at both Humber College and the University of Guelph-Humber to help students maximize their campus experience. Furthermore, I provide support to BSSE Program Facilitators, as they plan and facilitate programming/special events throughout the term and academic year.

As Coordinator, my passion is to create meaningful and holistic programs for Black identifying students to support their academic, social, personal and professional development and overall well-being.

Can you tell me about your current position and what you love and what are some of the challenges?

Things I enjoy:

Helping students get connected to other like-minded individuals
Helping to create/foster community and belonging for Black learners
Connecting with internal and external partners to establish opportunities for Black identifying students
Helping to create safe spaces for Black students
What’s the best career decision you’ve ever made?

The best career decision I’ve ever made was taking advantage of every opportunity to learn. I took the opportunity to work and volunteer in various sectors of social services because I knew they would add to my skills and qualifications.

What advice would you give to new social worker graduates?

Enjoy each opportunity and do not be afraid to step out of your comfort zone. Try to gain as much experience in the field as you can because all experiences including personal, volunteer and paid experiences are valuable.
