Director, Data Management, RBC Capital Markets
Information TechnologyInformation Systems & Technology (MA) 2012, Bachelor of Commerce (BCom) 2010
Delivery-oriented financial services professional specializing in the data management and governance domain, Ian Gergin has been working in the banking industry for over 10 years with stints in TD Wealth Management (trading systems), Invesco Asset Management (fund management accounting systems), Royal Bank of Canada (RBC) (credit risk reporting, wholesale credit risk, data management) and most recently, RBC Capital Markets (global credit data management).
Ian has managed teams of ~25 individuals onsite, near-shore and off-shore, including on-site work in the United States. His educational background includes a BCom and Master's in IT from York University. Ian's daily work includes liaising with audit and federal regulators on behalf of the bank and, internally maturing the data capabilities across the enterprise data domain structure. This includes data prioritization and materiality assessment, data lineage, data risk and control assessment and implementation, audit testing and assurance of data accuracy, completeness and timeliness for critical reporting and modeling.
I spent 7 years at York University (switched undergrad program half-way from straight IT to the BAS/BCom mixed program). In particular I found the math and information technology courses to be useful in teaching me a way of thinking and problem solving, beyond the actual technology material. Having access to faculty who had legitimate industry experience (versus just theoretical researchers) was a strength of the ITEC program at YorkU. The third- and fourth-year courses were particularly useful in preparing me for entry into the industry.
