AP/ANTH 4110 6.00 Development of Theory in Social Anthropology
What is the use of theory today? The purpose of this course is to explore and understand the possibilities of theory by acquiring a grounded and broad knowledge of different theoretical developments through the decades.
In the first term our approach moves away from the purely chronological exploration of theoretical schools, instead examining common theoretical topics approached in different eras with different intentions. We begin with the roots of social difference and the hidden logics of culture, turning then to analyses of colonialism, power, and inequality. The postmodern turn is explored, followed by theorizations on state power, globalization, citizenship, and neoliberalism.
