Marlene Murphy, the course instructor, is a producer in the CBC’s national newsroom in Toronto who works with reporters and editors across the country to provide daily news stories to local newsrooms.
Over the course of her career she has worked as a writer for CBC’s The National and CBC News Network, as well as in the CTV national newsroom. She has also published and presented research on internships at the CBC and presented a paper on how broadcast news organizations are shaping rules around social media use by staff.
Lise Lareau worked for CBC as a TV news producer for more than 30 years. For 10 of those years, she served as president of the Canadian Media Guild, the main union at the CBC and other media organizations including the Canadian Press, APTN, Vice Media and most recently Buzzfeed. 
Since then, her work has focused on improving conditions for more precarious media workers. She coordinates the CMG’s campaign to gain collective bargaining rights for those in the reality and factual TV production industry and serves on the federal government’s Labour Standards Advisory Committee.
York’s School of Continuing Studies is launching a new Post-Graduate Certificate in Public Relations in September 2019. This 8-month program is ideal for Communication Studies graduates who are looking to get into the field of public relations/corporate communications.

What’s happened
On June 17, York University held convocation ceremonies for graduands of the School of the Arts, Media, Performance & Design and the Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies. We caught up with a few Communication Studies students before and after the ceremony and asked them their thoughts on the day as well as "what does convocation mean to you?"

Professor Anne MacLennan presented Can I? PSAs, changing public discourse, and Cannabis in Ontario at the Canadian Communication Association annual conference on June 4, 2019.
Professor Natalie Coulter has been researching the pressures girls feel to show happiness, specifically, in correlation to “fun” slogan T-shirts for tween girls.
She spoke about how message T-shirts that emphasize smiling, being fun and looking happy – limit real feelings, at York University on June 8th.
Coulter’s talk was part of The York Circle Lecture and Lunch Series, a free day of presentations by leading York professors speaking about their research to an audience of York students, parents of students, alumni, friends and neighbours of the university.
Professor Coulter also recently won a SSRHC Connections Grant! Congratulations!
Prof. Jonathan Obar was awarded a grant by the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada for his project, Understanding “The Biggest Lie on the Internet”: Visualizing and Translating the Online Consent Challenge! Congratulations!
The Centre for Human Rights, Equity and Inclusion kicked-off Pride Week celebrations with a free screening of the film Queer Collie-tudes by Professor Michelle Mohabeer, on Monday, June 17.
The ground-breaking documentary is an 80-minute film that explores the experiences of queer Canadians from the Indo-Caribbean diaspora.
