As I continue to work as a Student Engagement Assistant in the LA&PS Colleges at York University, I’m thrilled to share some insights and reflections on my current experience. Being a work study student has provided me with invaluable skills and lessons that I know will benefit me in the long run.
The Power of Community Building
One of the primary responsibilities of my role is to support programming related to student transition and community building. By facilitating events and outreach initiatives, I've seen firsthand how creating a sense of community can significantly impact students' university experiences. These activities foster connections, provide support systems, and enhance the overall student experience. I've learned that community building is about creating inclusive spaces where everyone feels valued and heard.
The Importance of Effective Communication
From planning events to collaborating with various campus partners, effective communication has been crucial to my responsibilities. Whether it's drafting emails, updating documents, or engaging with students during events, clear and professional communication ensures that information is accurately conveyed and tasks are efficiently completed. This role has improved my ability to articulate ideas, provide feedback, and engage in meaningful conversations, all of which are essential skills in any professional setting.
Organizational and Time Management Skills
Juggling multiple responsibilities, such as planning workshops, assisting with orientation events, and maintaining records, has taught me the value of strong organizational and time management skills. Prioritizing tasks, setting deadlines, and keeping track of various projects are essential to ensuring that everything runs smoothly. This experience has equipped me with tools to manage my time effectively, a skill that will be beneficial throughout my academic and professional career.
Adaptability and Problem-Solving
In a dynamic environment like student engagement, unexpected challenges often arise. Whether it's a last-minute change in event logistics or a need to adapt programming based on student feedback, being adaptable and quick on my feet has been essential. I've learned to approach problems with a positive mindset, seek creative solutions, and remain flexible. This adaptability has strengthened my resilience and ability to thrive in fast-paced settings.
Leadership and
Teamwork
Working alongside Student Engagement Coordinators and other work-study students has highlighted the importance of both leadership and teamwork. Leading initiatives and taking the initiative on projects has built my confidence in my leadership abilities. Simultaneously, collaborating with a diverse team has reinforced the value of different perspectives and the strength of working together towards a common goal. This dual focus on leadership and teamwork has prepared me to contribute effectively in various professional environments.
Conclusion
My time as a work study Student has been incredibly rewarding. The lessons I learned about community building, communication, organization, adaptability and leadership have not only enhanced my current role but will also serve as a strong foundation for my future endeavors. Being part of the Student Engagement team at York University has been a transformative experience, and I look forward to continuing to grow and contribute to our vibrant campus community.
