Eligibility: You must have successfully completed the Advancing YU program in the previous year and be eligible for work-study or international work-study work within the faculty of LA&PS.  Applicants should also be eligible for work-study or international work-study in order to work within the Faculty of LA&PS. Please review the eligibility requirements for domestic students and international students to verify your status.

Number of Positions Available: 1 (number of positions are subject to budgetary approval)

Rate of Pay: $18.00 per hour

Employment Term: F 24 & W 25

Hours of Work: Up to 15 hours per week


Job Description:

The Work/Study Student program provides on-campus job opportunities for eligible York University undergraduate students. Work/Study Student employees are provided opportunities to contribute to support roles while developing valuable, relevant skills and work experience for the workplace. These roles offer a learning and development opportunity for Work/Study Student employees to receive experiential on-the-job training, guidance and mentorship. Under the guidance of permanent staff members, Work/Study Student employees will provide support to their relevant department/faculty in clerical, administrative and technical capacities. As part of your Work-Study/LEAP experience, you will participate in Becoming YU, a program designed to support students in:

  • creating meaningful goals and objectives;
  • recognizing the value of their personal, academic and professional experiences;
  • identifying their competencies and skills; and
  • articulating their skills and experiences with confidence.

Becoming YU includes regular meetings with your student employment supervisor/coach for reflecting on your progress and getting valuable feedback.

Job Purpose/Description:

The Advancing YU Student Lead is an upper year undergraduate student in good academic standing who will work with the Student Engagement Coordinators (SECs) to support the Advancing YU Program, and any additional projects as needed. The Advancing YU Student Lead will provide administrative support, contribute to the planning and execution of various events and initiatives, provide peer support, and maintain various records and documents in relation to the Advancing YU Program. The Advancing YU Student Lead will also support facilitating and leading peer to peer drop-in sessions both online and in-person, supporting and addressing any concerns from within the Advancing YU Program.

Becoming YU includes regular meetings with your supervisor/coach to reflect on your progress and get valuable feedback.

Student Learning Components:

Major Areas of Responsibility:

  • Fostering a community of inclusivity, collaboration, and elevating the student voice.
  • Providing peer-to-peer support via in-person, online drop-in, or peer mentoring sessions.
  • Providing administrative and logistical support for online and in-person activities, including workshops, panel discussions, and mentor/mentee meetings.
  • Attending regular meetings with supervisors, preparing for weekly meetings, discussing the status of ongoing Advancing YU projects, programs, and brainstorming ideas.
  • Assisting the SECs in developing and implementing evaluation and tracking tools to measure the impact of the Advancing YU Program. Examples include surveys, forms, and event reports.
  • Providing communication to program participants via a weekly newsletter.
  • Research related to program design, development, and assessment, as assigned.
  • Attending required training and professional development sessions, as required.
  • Attending regular meetings with Student Engagement Team and/or SECs.
  • Responding to emails and messages on MS Teams within a timely manner.
  • Completing other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Candidates MUST have successfully completed the Advancing YU program.
  • Current upper year undergraduate York student (i.e., third year or above).
  • Must be in good academic standing.
  • Experience and familiarity with Advancing YU, LA&PS, and York (Keele) campus student support services.
  • Previous experience in peer mentorship is an asset.
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written), academic writing, public speaking, and presentation proficiency.

  • Experience working with people from a variety of backgrounds/cultures.
  • Knowledge of York’s services and resources for students and of campus life.

Experience required:

  • Successful completion of the Advancing YU program.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills and an ability to work with students in a supportive, professional manner.
  • Demonstrated commitment to peer support and the value of post-secondary experiences.
  • Experience-based knowledge of effective study strategies and learning skills.
  • Experience-based knowledge of Advancing YU and York University resources.
  • Ability to liaise and build relationships with campus partners including but not limited to: Learning Skills Services, Career Centre, and LA&PS Academic Advising.
  • Experience with project management tools such as MS Teams, Outlook, Slack, etc.
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills, with demonstrated presentation skills.
  • Some graphic design/ artistic ability, marketing and/or communications background is an asset.
  • Ability and willingness to work both independently and as part of a team.
