Student Communications Assistant

Job Type: Media and communication

Eligibility: Domestic or International undergraduate students. Must also be work/study eligible' and must complete the Financial Aid, Awards and Scholarships (FAAS) Application. Number of Positions Available: 1 (number of positions are subject to budgetary approval)

Type of Position: Paid

Rate of Pay: $17.00 per hour

Employment Term: F 24 & W 25

Hours of Work: Fall/Winter: Up to 15 hours per week


Job Description:

The LA&PS Student Communications Assistant is responsible for the production of content for the LA&PS Voices Blog and LAPS Colleges Instagram account, as well as other promotional and student life content to be shared through other platforms. The purpose of this role is to create an outlet for student voices, as well as to increase student engagement through promoting various events, activities and opportunities for LA&PS Students. This role will report to the Student Engagement Team, LA&PS Colleges.

Major Areas of Responsibility:

 

Social Media Engagement

  • Plan, create and maintain engaging social media content
  • Support the development of social media strategies
  • Research existing social media trends and best practices
  • Ensure that all content and materials adhere to brand standards
  • Collaborate with Student Engagement Coordinators and LA&PS Colleges Staff to support website and social media initiatives
  • Other duties as assigned

Event Promotion

  • Assist with the creation of marketing and digital advertising materials
  • Preparing event posters to be posted in designated promotion areas
  • Submitting event listings and poster images to various community partners for additional promotion
  • Other duties as assigned

LA&PS Voices Blog

  • Produce blog articles and content regularly for the academic year.
  • Recruit contributions from volunteer writers/photographers and follow up on tasks assigned for completion.
  • Cover LA&PS Colleges events and conduct interviews within the LA&PS Colleges community.
  • Write stories/articles for the blog that promote student engagement
  • Take photographs as needed.
  • May be asked to assist with creating or editing various community videos.
  • Other duties as assigned

Student Learning Components:

The Work/Study Student program provides on-campus job opportunities for eligible York University undergraduate students. Work/Study Student employees are provided opportunities to contribute to support roles while developing valuable, relevant skills and work experience for the workplace. These roles offer a learning and development opportunity for Work/Study Student employees to receive experiential on-the-job training, guidance and mentorship. Under the guidance of permanent staff members, Work/Study Student employees will provide support to their relevant department/faculty in clerical, administrative and technical capacities. As part of your Work-Study/LEAP experience, you will participate in Becoming YU, a program designed to support students in:

  • creating meaningful goals and objectives;
  • recognizing the value of their personal, academic and professional experiences;
  • identifying their competencies and skills; and
  • articulating their skills and experiences with confidence.
  •  Becoming YU includes regular meetings with your student employment supervisor/coach for reflecting on your progress and getting valuable feedback.

Qualifications:

  • Current full-time undergraduate York University student.
  • Work-study eligible
  • Experience writing articles and/or creating content for social media and/or event promotions
  • Experience working as a team and independently.
  • Experience in video making/editing is an asset.

  • Exceptional written communication skills
  • Excellent oral communication skills
  • Superior attention to detail and ability to exercise good judgement
  • High proficiency using Microsoft Word, Publisher and/or PowerPoint
  • Ability to communicate with others to explain and share information.
  • Ability to creatively write content to engage an intended audience
  • Ability to use social and digital media to effectively communicate or respond to others.
  • Ability to meet deadlines and organize time effectively
  • Ability to use various design software (Canva, Publisher) and social media platforms.
  • Ability to learn and use a variety of computer applications.
