Job Description:
The Student Engagement Assistant is an upper year level undergraduate student with good academic standing, who will work with Student Engagement Coordinators (SECs) and other LA&PS staff to support a broad range of initiatives across LA&PS Colleges.
The Student Engagement Assistant will work alongside the Student Engagement Coordinators (SEC) to support programming related to student transition, engagement, community building, and fostering academic, personal and professional development in LA&PS students. The Student Engagement Assistant will deliver programming through the planning and execution of various events, workshops, outreach initiatives, collaborations with campus partners, and other specialized projects. The Student Engagement Assistant will also provide administrative support, including helping with program delivery, communications, maintenance of various records and documents, and any additional tasks, as needed.
Major Areas of Responsibility:
- The Student Engagement Assistant will support SECs in the planning and delivery of a broad range of engagement initiatives including programming related to student transition, mentorship, campus involvement, professional and personal development, community building, etc.
- Assist with the facilitation of small- and large-scale events, participates in student-facing outreach initiatives, engages with members of the York community and represents LA&PS in college spaces and across campus.
- Support the development of specialized projects and pilot programs to better serve the needs of LA&PS students.
- Attends weekly meetings with SECs and other LA&PS Colleges staff to assist with the planning and delivery of initiatives.
- Contributes to fostering a community of collaboration and support among affiliated programs including the Peer Mentor Program, Advancing YU, and more. Works alongside other work-study students both in LA&PS colleges and other departments to execute events.
- Assist in developing and implementing feedback in conjunction with the Student Engagement Coordinators to measure the impact of the LA&PS Colleges programming.
- Works alongside the LA&PS Colleges Team to assist with the planning and delivery of Fall, Winter and Summer Orientation events.
- Updates various documents and records and maintains the organization of shared documents in the appropriate locations.
- Regularly monitors group communications and our general LA&PS email account and responds to emails professionally and accurately within a timely manner.
- Attends required training and professional development sessions, as required. Attends regular meetings with Student Engagement Coordinators or supervisors, responds to emails and messages on MS Teams within a timely manner.
- Complete other duties as assigned.
Student Learning Components:
The Work/Study Student program provides on-campus job opportunities for eligible York University undergraduate students. Work/Study Student employees are provided opportunities to contribute to support roles while developing valuable, relevant skills and work experience for the workplace. Qualifications:

- Undergraduate York student
- Good academic standing
- Previous relevant experience with peer mentoring or other peer support at a post-secondary, preferably university level
- Eagerness to learn and take initiative
- Knowledge of York’s services and resources for students
- Students who are a good fit for this position are dynamic, approachable, knowledgeable and open to learning about themselves and others. They will show high levels of emotional intelligence combined with excellent adaptability, organizational skills, and team-building skills
Skills
- Experience-based knowledge of effective strategies for academic, personal and professional success at university
- Extensive knowledge of York University and campus resources
- Ability to liaise with campus partners including but not limited to: Learning Skills Services, Career Centre, and LA&PS Academic Advising
- Experience with project management tools such as MS Teams, Slack, etc.
- Sensitivity to and awareness of the academic support needs of students
- Ability to work supportively with students in a confidential and professional manner
- Demonstrated commitment to peer support and the value of post-secondary education
- Demonstrate leadership ability
- Excellent oral and written communications skills
- Strong presentation skills
- Some graphic design/ artistic ability, marketing and/or communications background is an asset
