Graduate Students Resources

If you're looking for support and community as you navigate your grad school journey, look no further. There are writing workshops where you can receive assistance with your MRP/Thesis, career & professional development workshops that will help you make the most of your degree and kickstart your professional journey, as well as social gatherings, orientation events, and more!

Orientation

Every year incoming and returning Masters, Doctoral and Post-Doctoral students can expect several events to welcome them (and re-welcome them) to campus. These events focus on social connection, finding supports and services and providing valuable insights to help you be successful in your program – and beyond. A full listing of events and associate registration information will be available in the Summer, well in advance to the start of the academic year.

Graduate Lounge

The LA&PS Graduate Experience operates the Graduate Lounge, which is available in Atkinson College for all graduate student from across the faculty. Throughout the year, you can take part in a variety of helpful webinars and learning events to support you in your job search strategies, thesis writing and degree progression. We partner with a variety of campus partners, such as Vanier College Productions, the Career Centre and the Writing Centre, to ensure you have the right resources at your disposal throughout your time here as a graduate student.

Grad Café

Open to all LA&PS Grad students, Grad Café provides a relaxed environment and place to connect and engage with fellow students across the faculty to further foster a sense of community. This space is intended to be used for informal gatherings and discussions that pertain to graduate student life. Grad Café will occur monthly, in room 124 Atkinson. Refreshments will be provided.

Grad Choir

Connect with fellow graduate students by getting involved with New College’s Grad Choir in partnership with Vanier College Productions. Rehearsals are on Monday’s from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. in VC 010 starting on November 4.

Career & Professional Development

Our events and workshops offer a great platform for career conversations, leveraging your graduate degree, connecting with York University alumni, and taking up professional development masterclasses in partnership with Vanier College Productions. Come and explore the diverse opportunities to develop your transferable skills with us!

Writing Series

Join our series of writing workshops in partnership with the Writing Centre this fall and winter semesters. Gain valuable insights from students, faculty, and staff throughout the series, and learn about on-campus services available to help you succeed with your MRP/Thesis writing journey.

VCP Show Choir

Attention all theatre lovers! Here's an incredible opportunity to connect with fellow graduate students who share your passion for performance. In partnership with Vanier College Productions, join the newly launched Show Choir. Step out of your comfort zone and learn valuable skills in a friendly and fun environment. Plus, performances for the larger York community are on the horizon!

Grant Application Exchange

Are you looking for additional feedback on your SSHRC or OGS funding applications? The LA&PS Colleges team has got you covered with the Grant Application Exchange. It's a peer-to-peer review system that pairs you with a fellow student to provide constructive feedback. You'll have the chance to improve your application before submitting it. All enrolled graduate students in LA&PS are eligible to apply for this opportunity. Don't miss out on this valuable chance to enhance your chances of securing funding.

Graduate Advisory Committee

New College’s Graduate Advisory Committee is a voluntary forum focused on enhancing the Graduate Student Experience at LA&PS. Committee members include current MA & PhD students who strive to identify and support the needs of students at a graduate level.

Applications to join the Graduate Advisory Committee for 2024-2025 have closed. Please check back in the summer to apply for the following school year.
