Anti-Black Racism Initiatives Fund

The Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies acknowledges that white supremacy and anti-Black racism are deeply embedded in the structures and systems of academia and, indeed, at all levels of the Canadian educational system. The Faculty also recognizes that we can no longer pretend that these inequities do not exist, and that we have an opportunity to collectively work toward ensuring a more inclusive learning, teaching and working environment for all our community members. Understanding that combatting anti-Black racism is a powerful and necessary step towards anti-racism and equity for all, the Faculty has established the Anti-Black Racism Initiatives Fund.

This fund supports events, programs and initiatives that challenge anti-Black racism and provide support for Black students, faculty and staff. The Advisory Committee on LA&PS' anti-Black Racism Strategies will assess all applications and make recommendations for funding to the Associate Dean Global and Community Engagement. Funds will be disbursed as equally as possible between staff, students, and faculty. Student applicants will be assisted by LA&PS staff.

Grant Provision

The Anti-Black Racism Initiatives Fund provides three levels of support:

  • Up to $500 for small community building or mentorship events, —funds may cover the cost of honorarium for a speaker for a virtual event or the cost of food (alcohol not included) where appropriate social distancing measures are possible.
  • Up to $1000 for bigger ideas that can be implemented with a small group, such as seminars, workshops, and wellness initiatives.
  • Up to $3000 for projects that involve larger audiences to drive impact, such as conferences and webinars.
