Social Control and the Violation of Human Rights

This course examines how forms of social control can lead to violations of human rights. Topics may include the restriction of dissent; whistleblowing; activism; surveillance and securitization; the impact of patriarchal structures and ideology; and democratic mobilization.

The course also examines the processes by which certain forms of social action and social difference get designated as deviant and are thus subject to repressive forms of social control. The course offers a broad overview of justice issues and the human rights concerns created by neoliberal globalization. The course also examines various attempts to control ongoing struggles for progressive social change in relation to issues such as: moral regulation, femicide, violence, forced migration, political imprisonment, modern enslavement, public safety and security, among others.
