Canadian Immigration Policy and Settlement
This course uses a critical human rights approach to explore the role of the Canadian state and the economy through policies and programs in the areas of immigration and settlement. The evolution of the Immigration Act is examined in reference to equity initiatives and exclusionary practices.
This course explores Canadian immigration and refugee policies. As a leading country in both immigration and global refugee resettlement, Canada has a reputation for being a multicultural and welcoming country. This course takes a critical lens at examining Canada’s immigration and refugee policies such as the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act and Canada’s unique refugee sponsorship program. The course brings together diverse scholarly perspective on Canada’s historical experience with immigration and refugee sponsorship. Students will also learn through the examination of various relevant and recent cases in Canada.
