LA&PS Spotlights

Emerging Scholars: Grace Barakat

Emerging Scholars: Grace Barakat

With York University identifying research intensification as a key University goal and a core endeavour that broadly enriches our institution, collaboration and mentorship between researchers and students become integral to the process. This spotlight features a collaboration between LA&PS Graduate Student Grace Barakat, Sociology and Public Policy & Administration Professor Brenda Spotton Visano.

A report released in 2021 by Islamic Relief Canada (IRC) titled, One Year Later – Unmasking COVID-19, and authored by Barakat and Visano concludes that the pandemic threatens to worsen economic inequality and further marginalize vulnerable groups. The report provides an in-depth examination of the impacts of the pandemic and offers important policy recommendations. A follow-up study investigating the mental health effects of COVID-19 on racialized working women is currently underway.

Barakat reflects on her experience and how it has opened the door for other research and policy-related activities, including the latest federal elections:

“Having the opportunity to serve as an expert advisor for the 2021 federal election English leaders’ debate was an important moment for my personal and professional development,” explained Barakat. “Using the knowledge I’ve gained from my studies and research at York, I was able to explain the implications of proposed policies and funding regarding post-secondary education (PSE) and student debt. Being a part of the political commentary is essential in a society filled with disinformation and deception. Academics have a responsibility to the broader community to share their knowledge in accessible ways. I’ve also done other hybrid research with a non-for-profit on the economic impacts of COVID-19 on marginalized groups.”

Barakat explained that her work has always been driven by bridging academia and activism through creating meaningful and accessible research. Connect with Grace Barakat to learn more about her work.
