LA&PS Spotlights

Lorne Foster and team: Blackness in Canada project

Lorne Foster and team: Blackness in Canada project

Websites are a great knowledge mobilization tool, especially when your project involves a landmark national survey of Canada’s Black population. Led by the Institute for Social Research’s (ISR) Director Dr. Lorne Foster (SPPA), the Blackness in Canada project (BIC) website aims to facilitate knowledge exchange and collaboration between researchers and non-academic stakeholders.

“Our research aims to uncover what it means to be Black in Canada by focusing on Black people’s actual lived experiences and mapping the structural vulnerabilities and quality of life gaps between diverse Black communities,” explained Dr. Foster, “this will allow for a more effective and targeted approach to needs assessments and sound policy solutions.”

Jackie Sikdar, an MA student in the Socio-Legal Studies program, is one of two Research Assistants who played a central role in the project. She emphasized that “the results of the research paint a very vivid picture of the pervasive anti-Black racism that exists in Canada, a reality that is often erased from Canada’s ‘multicultural’ landscape.” Marcelle-Anne Fletcher who is completing her PhD in Social and Political Thought agreed and offered a useful context for the project: “In a post-COVID world, Canadians are ready, if not eager, to contribute to larger discussions about the impacts of race in facets of our society. Our research team anticipated and continues to respond to Canadians’ renewed sense of urgency to reckon with the implications of race.” To learn more about the project check this great BIC fact sheet infographic.
