LA&PS Spotlights

Early-career scholars: Abigail Shabtay

Early-career scholars: Abigail Shabtay

Our early-career scholar featured in this issue is Professor Abigail Shabtay (Humanities), an Assistant Professor in the Children, Childhood, and Youth program, who is leading four different SSHRC-funded projects related to children’s rights, youth activism, and the performing arts. Professor Shabtay was able to demonstrate strong skills in Knowledge Mobilization and developing partnerships. For instance, one of her recent SSHRC PEG projects was in partnership with Young People’s Theatre, a Toronto-based theatre organization, focusing on how children and youth can engage in collaborative playwriting through online mediation.

With support from SSHRC’s Connection Grant, Dr. Shabtay, ran the third annual Children, Youth and Performance Conference, which has become the largest academic conference focusing on children, youth, and the performing arts in Canada. “We are thrilled to have had so much interest from researchers, artists, practitioners and community organizers from across the country and abroad from more than 22 different countries,” explained Dr. Shabtay. “In addition to research-focused presentations, we had interactive workshops, performances, and networking/collaboration events for those looking to build partnerships between researchers, educators, and community organizations.” You can follow project updates on Twitter and Facebook.

More than ever, community-engaged research is essential to our academic practices. Dr. Shabtay applies innovative methodologies that engage children and youth in the research design of her recent SSHRC IDG. She emphasized that “while drama-based methods have been used in educational and therapeutic contexts with children, their use in child and youth studies research contexts is still quite limited. This project will take a youth-centred approach, engaging youth in the development and adaptation of drama-based methods.”

Connect with Professor Abigail Shabtay and learn more about her research and projects in this Robarts Centre interview.

Event: Art-based knowledge mobilization – Nov 18 at 4:00 pm

Artist and York Alumna Dr. Noa Yaari explores combinations of words and images in the creation and communication of knowledge. In her doctoral project in History, which she completed in 2018, she examined how contemporary historians integrate words and images in their publications to depict the past. To that end, she conceptualized the “multiform grammar” as a system for the analysis and composition of verbal-visual rhetoric. Yaari will be giving a hands-on workshop on art-based knowledge mobilization on Thursday, November 18, at 4:00 pm, at the Canadian Knowledge Transfer & Exchange Community of Practice. Learn more about the event and register here.

Please find further information on the KTECoP website, and here are the registration form on Eventbrite and the link to the event itself.
