Events for Impact: Dionne Brand’s A Map to the Door of No Return at 20: A Gathering

Dionne Brand’s A Map to the Door of No Return at 20: A Gathering, was a four-day virtual international conference and participatory workshop that took place from November 3-6, 2021. The ninety-five presenters from Kenya, Austria, Scotland, Sweden, England, France, Trinidad, Jamaica, Saint Lucia, Canada, and the United States created an unforgettable experience of scholarly and artistic community knowledge exchange—a remarkable achievement for a virtual event.

The gathering, funded by a SSHRC Connection Grant, marked the official launch of the Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Black Studies in the Humanities, held by Dr. Christina Sharpe, and was the inaugural event of her Black. Still. Life. Research and Working Group—a new model of study that brings together established and emerging Black Studies scholars, graduate students, and visual and performing artists whose work investigates the myriad ways Black life is made and lived. The event was co-hosted by Humanities professor Dr. Andrea Davis, the academic convenor of the 2023 Congress of the Humanities and Social Sciences to be held at York, and was supported by graduate students, Marcelle-Anne Fletcher, Michelle Molubi, and Aysha Campbell.

In addition to its academic and artistic magnitude and the incredible plethora of speakers, the multimodality that defined the event’s design—pre-recorded readings and reflections, live scholarly presentations, films, music, poetry, and social media engagement—was significant. This deep attention to knowledge mobilization bridges the gap between research and art, the university and the general public, all while locating Black Studies firmly within the humanities and fine arts. You can watch all the prerecorded and live event talks on the gathering’s official YouTube channel and learn more about the event by visiting the official website.
