LA&PS Spotlights
2022 Black Scholars Research Fund recipient
This year’s Black History Month Celebration at York coincides with the announcement of the LA&PS Black Scholars Research Fund (BSRF) grant. “The Black Scholars Research Fund was launched in 2020 as part of our collective response to the deep inequities faced by Black scholars and was aimed particularly at more junior colleagues,” emphasized Ravi de Costa, LA&PS Associate Dean, Research & Graduate Studies. The fund supports innovative research project ideas from eligible applicants who identify as Black peoples of African Descent.
BSRF funding recipient Professor Jeffrey Squire is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Social Science, where he teaches in the Urban Studies Program. His project, “Covid-19 and Healthcare Waste Management in Urban Africa” examines healthcare waste management in African cities against the backdrop of the ongoing pandemic.
“The ongoing global Coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic with its multiple mutations and ultra-contagious variants has brought a renewed focus on healthcare waste management in urban Africa,” explained Dr. Squire. “Mitigating risks requires a well-coordinated management approach involving prudent regulatory arrangements, training, as well the availability of sound technical, financial and human resources. These are areas where most cities across Africa have historically faced tremendous challenges, a situation compounded by a surge in demand for healthcare services since the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic”. A key output of the research project is the dissemination of critical knowledge that can inform best practices for healthcare waste management in urban Africa and other cities in the global south.
