LA&PS Spotlights
Climate Change Research Month at York: Nirupama Agrawal and Marcela Porporato
Climate Change Research Month at York supports the University’s commitment to climate change action through the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. In our March issue of the LA&PS research Spotlights, we wanted to feature some of the work of our faculty members on Climate change.
The collaboration between two scholars in the School of Administrative Studies at LA&PS, Dr. Nirupama Agrawal, an expert in natural disasters and risk management, and Dr. Marcela Porporato, a professional accountant specialized in performance management, is part of a larger project funded by Chartered Professional Accountants (CPA) Ontario to investigate and report on how to create awareness on the fight against corruption. The research is also supported by Nathanson Centre, Osgoode Hall Law School.
“Our study explores the root causes behind repetitive critical infrastructure failures, routinely and wrongfully pinned on natural hazards (heavy rains and flooding) and the climate change narrative,” explained Dr. Agrawal, and added that urban resilience in changing climate has to be rooted in the integrity of public institutions and policy. Dr. Porporato indicated “It is vital here to differentiate disasters triggered by natural phenomena or man-made causes. To better understand man-made disasters, we link with corruption literature focused on procurement from the accounting research tradition.”
This timely collaboration contributes to the discussion on how corruption uses the force of nature to perpetuate itself in a context of weak control mechanisms and low transparency. The case illustrates how corrupt governance uses natural hazards turned into disasters to maintain an infinite state of emergency, allowing two negative practices to perpetuate: grant contracts without public tender and contractors cutting corners to ensure that the construction needs repairs or reconstructions soon. This combination of factors can result in man-made disasters that shield behind a climate change narrative. Learn more about the project in their forthcoming chapter in the International Handbook of Disasters (Springer – Nature) and by checking this poster summarizing two figures used in this study on climate change and corruption (PDF).
Book Launch of Twice Migrated, Twice Displaced by Tania Das Gupta
Dr. Tania Das Gupta is a Professor in the School of Gender, Sexuality and Women’s Studies. She is currently also the Affirmative Action, Equity, and Inclusivity Officer there. In addition to her academic work, she has extensive experience in community work with immigrant women and anti-racism and has acted as a consultant for human rights lawyers and nurses’ groups on numerous cases of racial harassment. In bridging the gap between academy and practice, Das Gupta’s latest book, Twice Migrated, Twice Displaced, will appeal to both academic scholars and immigrant and refugee settlement practitioners.
Twice Migrated, Twice Displaced explores the lives of “twice migrated” Gulf South Asians who arrived in the Greater Toronto Area from India and Pakistan via Persian Gulf countries such as the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia. Drawing on in-depth interviews, Tania Das Gupta reveals the multiple migration patterns of this unique group and the class, gender, racial, and religious discrimination they have encountered. She analyzes such themes as class mobility, the formation of transnational families, and identities in a post-9/11 context. How does the Canadian labour market affect transnationalism? Are immigrants being strategic in using step migration and transnational living practices?
You can now register for the Twice Migrated, Twice Displaced book launch on Thursday, March 24, 2022, from 12:30 to 13:45 EST. This event is co-presented by the Global Labour Research Centre and the York Centre for Asian Research at York University. Also connect with Dr. Tania Das Gupta to learn more about the project.
