Professor Joan Judge, FRSC, wins 2021 Guggenheim Fellowship

The Faculty of LA&PS is thrilled to announce that Professor Joan Judge, FRSC, Department of History, has received a prestigious Guggenheim Fellowship for 2021 in the area of East Asian Studies.

The Guggenheim Foundation offers fellowships to exceptional individuals in pursuit of scholarship in any field of knowledge and creation. The 2021 Guggenheim Fellowships were awarded to a diverse group of 184 artists, writers, scholars, and scientists. These exceptional candidates were chosen through a rigorous peer-review process from almost 3,000 applicants. 49 scholarly disciplines and artistic fields, 73 different academic institutions, 28 states and 2 Canadian provinces are represented.

“For me, the Fellowship is important in two ways,” says Professor Judge. “It is a recognition of the importance of my current research project on Chinese vernacular knowledge. This is in some ways a risky project: I am not dealing with high intellectual traditions or major political events but with the ways, those I refer to as “common readers” experienced historical change and processed new scientific ideas that entered China from the turn of the twentieth century. It is also important because it will give me time to make significant progress on my manuscript which has the working title “China’s Mundane Revolution: Cheap Print, Vernacular Knowledge, and Common Reading in the Long Republic, 1894-1955.”

Click here for information on Professor Judge’s publications.

Professor Ravi de Costa, LA&PS Associate Dean Research and Graduate Studies reflected on this prestigious accomplishment saying: “Guggenheim Fellowships are among the highest awards available to scholars, to recognize and support the most creative and original forms of research. Professor Judge’s award is not only recognition of her contributions to Modern Chinese history and cultural studies, but also of the project the award will support, which will set out an entirely new understanding of the sources and development of popular Chinese knowledge, and their impact on everyday life. At a time of deepening suspicion of China’s economic and geopolitical behaviour and motivations, this project is of critical value in bringing new ways of thinking about the country, its people and their culture to a wide readership.”

You can also see the announcement of Professor Judge’s Guggenheim Fellowship in today’s issue of YFile. Learn more about this year’s Fellows from the Guggenheim Foundation press release or visit the Foundation’s website at www.gf.org.

Faculty Toolkit for Student Success

This online tool was created to help faculty members, teaching assistants and you, our staff, navigate the various student services and supports across campus, so that they can more easily connect students to the right place at the right time. In the Toolkit for Student Success, the supports that students most often need are grouped into five categories: 1) Academic Success & Learning Supports; 2) Student Well-being; 3) Accommodations & Academic Consideration; 4) Degree Completion, Careers & Future; and 5) Students in Distress.  If you or your colleagues encounter a student in need of support simply follow the appropriate pathway in the Toolkit to lead to a downloadable PDF that can be sent to the student via email. Connect with Catherine Salole (salolec@yorku.ca) should you have any feedback and/or questions.

You will be required to enter your Passport York user ID and password for YU Link to gain access to the spreadsheet. Alternatively, you may contact ORS at research@yorku.ca to send you the file as an attachment.
