Reminder: VPRI Grant Clinic – LA&PS Internal Faculty Submission Process (resubmission stream)

Resubmission Stream Submissions are due April 15, 2021, at 4:00 pm (EST).

The Research Commons is now accepting applications for the 2021 Grant Clinic, a program that provides a selected group of researchers comprehensive supports to develop applications for Canada’s core Tri-Council operating grant competitions in Fall 2021: SSHRC Insight, NSERC Discovery and CIHR Project. Faculty who are interested in participating in this program must submit proposals to the Faculty using this Machform. Call for Nominations: Dean’s Awards for Distinction in Research

Deadline: submit a nomination package by May 1st, 2021.

The Committee on Research Policy and Planning is pleased to announce the call for nominations for the 2020-2021 LA&PS Awards for Distinction in Research. This year nominations are being accepted for the following categories:

  • – LA&PS Award for Distinction in Research, Creativity or Scholarship
  • – LA&PS Award in Social Justice Research (one award)

Resource: LA&PS Zoom webinar 500 booking service

LA&PS Research Office, Office of the Dean has purchased a Zoom webinar license for up to 500 participants. We are pleased to offer this service to our LA&PS faculty who would like to organize webinar(s) for Research or dissemination of Research purposes. Research commons Information Session: Early Research Award Round 16 Information session

The ERA program helps promising recently-appointed Ontario researchers build their research teams of undergraduates, graduate students, post-doctoral fellows, research assistants, associates and technicians. the Round 16 competition has been launched with a deadline of June 11, 2021. Join us for an informative session with our SIRI specialist, ERA winners and reviewers to learn valuable tops and insights on how to prepare your application.

SSHRC Partnership Development Grants Information Session (LA&PS)

The Research Support unit cordially invites you to an information session on SSHRC Partnership Development Grants (PDG). PDGs (maximum $200,000, duration 1-3 years, one competition per year) provide support to teams/partnerships, led by a project director, to develop research and/or related activities in the social sciences and humanities, including knowledge mobilization and the meaningful involvement of students and emerging scholars, by fostering new partnerships with existing and/or potential partners; or to design and test new partnership approaches for research and/or related activities that may result in best practices or models that either can be adapted by others or have the potential to be scaled up to a regional, national or international level.

The session will feature an overview of the programs, guidance on strategies for developing competitive proposals, and includes a discussion with Faculty Members who have submitted a successful PDG application. In addition, the session will outline additional resources that the Dean’s Office has developed to facilitate applications for this funding opportunity.

LA&PS Support for Scholarly Journals

Deadline: April 7, 2021
Value: Up to $3,000

The objective of this fund is to offset costs related to the successful operations of scholarly journals for which LA&PS faculty members hold substantial, on-going senior editorial roles.

We are extending the deadline for our Support for Scholarly Journals fund, until April 7th. Also, for this year only, we are waiving the restriction that applications can only be made every other fiscal year. So if you received an award last year, you are now eligible to apply for this round. The application form for LA&PS support for scholarly journals is available on our internal awards page.

Spring 2021 LA&PS Minor Research Grant (MRG) Competition

Deadline: April 15th, 2021
Value: Up to $5000

The application form along with details about eligibility, submission process and other instructions can be found on the Council website. Junior faculty are eligible to apply for this fund annually.  The LA&PS Research Office is providing support to Faculty members who are preparing a Canadian Common CV (CCV) as part of their MRG application. Please contact Paminderjit Sunner at lapscrpp@yorku.ca should you have any questions concerning eligibility or the submission process.

Tri-Agency Research Data Management Policy

The Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC), the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) (the agencies) have announced the launch of the Tri-Agency Research Data Management Policy. This statement of principles outlines the agencies’ overarching expectations regarding research data management, and the responsibilities of researchers, research communities, research institutions and research funders in meeting these expectations. The policy includes resources to support the development of data management plans (DMP). Details are available in the Tri-Agency FAQ.

External Grants and Fellowships

Launch of Round 16 Early Researcher Awards (ERA) Program

Value: a maximum of $100,000 matched by an additional $50,000 from the researcher’s Faculty and/or a partner organization.
Deadlines:
– Internal deadline for Faculty Approval: April 26, 9:00 am (EST)
– Internal deadline for submission of letters of reference to ORS: May 17, 2021
– Internal deadline for complete application including ORS checklist: June 7, 2021, at 9:00 am (EST)
– Agency deadline: Friday, June 11, 2021, at 5:00 pm (EST)

The Early Researcher Award (ERA) program helps promising, recently-appointed Ontario researchers build their research teams of undergraduates, graduate students, post-doctoral fellows, research assistants and technicians. The goal of the program is to improve Ontario’s ability to attract and retain the best and brightest research talent. Program materials, including ERA Program Guidelines and Application Form, were posted on the Early Researcher Awards page on the government website.

As matching commitments are required, interested applicants need to contact Ravi de Costa, Associate Dean, Research and Graduate studies and David Cuff, Director of Strategic Research and Partnerships, as soon as possible, with project title, 150-word research summary and the names of three eligible referees who have agreed to provide a letter of reference. Interested applicants should provide the names of confirmed letter writers to the Associate Dean, no later than April 26, 2021, at 9:00 am. Two of the letters must come from arm’s length referees as defined in the guidelines. Completed proposals are due at ORS no later than June 7, 2021.

CIHR HIV/AIDS and STBBI Community-Based Research (CBR) Program

Value and duration: maximum amount per grant is $150,000 per year for up to three years for a total of $450,000, per grant.
Agency Deadline: April 27, 2021

The CBR Program supports partnerships among community organizations, researchers, and decision-makers working in areas such as, but not limited to: housing, mental health, substance use disorders, activity limitations and employment, health services and access to care for key and hard to reach populations. Research projects involving quantitative and/or qualitative research methods, including epidemiology, intervention research, arts-informed research, case studies and interviews, are eligible for funding. CIHR Call for Proposals: Health Research Training Platform

Value and Duration:
up to $400,000 per year for up to 6 years, for a total of $2,400,000 per grant.

Agency Deadlines:
Phase 1: Registration Deadline – Due April 21, 2021
Phase 2: Full Application – Due June 22, 2021

The Health Research Training Platform (HRTP) Pilot funding opportunity is intended to support the development of interdisciplinary, inter-jurisdictional, and intersectoral research training platforms that will attract a diverse cadre of high-calibre trainees and ECRs, and equip them with the skills required for academic and non-academic careers. These research training platform grants can be used to build capacity in established or emerging areas, within the scope of the research training areas identified in the funding pools outlined below. SSHRC Joint Initiative for Digital Citizen Research – Connection Grants

  • Value:
    – Events – $7,000 to $25,000
    – Outreach Activities – $7,000 to $50,000; higher amounts may be considered if well justified
  • Duration:1 year
  • Agency Deadline: May 1, August 1, November 1, 2021, at 12:00 PM (EST)

SSHRC announced the relaunching of the Connection Grants arm of the Initiative for Digital Citizen Research (IDCR), a joint initiative with the Department of Canadian Heritage (PCH). The IDCR aims to develop a better understanding of the impacts of online disinformation in Canada in order to better inform programs and policies, build Canada’s capacity to conduct research on – and related to – countering online disinformation and other related online harms, and help foster a community of researchers engaged with digital citizenship and online disinformation in Canada. It also aims to provide assistance to selected events and outreach activities for short-term, targeted knowledge mobilization initiatives.

SSHRC Partnership Engage Grants (PEG)

  • Value: $7,000 to $25,000
  • Duration: 1 year
  • Agency Deadline:  June 15, September 15, December 15, 2021 and March 15, 2022, at 12:00 PM (EST)

These grants provide short-term and timely support for partnered research activities that will inform decision-making at a single partner organization from the public, private or not-for-profit sector. The small-scale, stakeholder-driven partnerships supported through Partnership Engage Grants are meant to respond to immediate needs and time constraints facing organizations in non-academic sectors. NSERC – Alliance Grants: Option 2

  • Value: over $30,000 to $100,000 per year
  • Duration: 1 to 5 years
  • Deadline: No deadline

NSERC has released details about a new Alliance Option 2 two-pager that provides an overview of what the NSERC Alliance Option 2 funding is all about. The projects should aim to address and are driven by an unmet societal need, meaning that the results matter not just to the partner organizations but also to the public. Refer to the NSERC resources page to access the best practices webinar, a summary of NSERC requirements and more. The results should be broadly shared in various formats, allowing even non-specialists outside the project to understand and use the results. CIHR Funding Opportunities

A list of funding opportunities through CIHR can be found on this page of the agency’s website. Please be attentive to any COVID-19 update that appears as part of the posting for specific opportunities. Due to the large volume of RFAs, the Office of Research Services has created a simplified Excel spreadsheet that will make it easier for researchers to locate the funding call that is most appropriate to their research area. You will be required to enter your Passport York user ID and password for YU Link to gain access to the spreadsheet. Alternatively, you may contact ORS at research@yorku.ca to send you the file as an attachment.
