Announcement: Dean’s Award for Research Excellence (DARE) 2021 – Call for Projects

Deadline: January 22, 2021, at 4:00 PM (EST)

The Dean’s Award for Research Excellence (DARE) invites submissions from faculty members for DARE research project descriptions, due via MachForm on our new DARE website, DARE for Faculty, (project description details available on the website).

DARE provides opportunities for Liberal Arts & Professional Studies (LA&PS), undergraduate students, to engage in research projects supervised by faculty members over the Summer Term. The primary goal of the Award is to support the development of students’ research skills by providing them with hands-on experience on a research project being undertaken by a faculty supervisor. The award value is $5,000 per student (paid as a monthly stipend over the summer months). Examples of previous DARE projects are available here.

LA&PS Black Scholars Research Fund

Value: Up to $5,000

Deadline: January 15

The Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies (LA&PS) has established the LA&PS Black Scholars Research Fund (BSRF) to support innovative research project ideas from qualified eligible applicants who self-identify as Black peoples of African Descent. Projects may be standalone or part of a broader research program. Applicants must have an eligible affiliation with York University and LA&PS. LA&PS Black Scholars Research Fund Application Form must be filled in and submitted to lapsrsc@yorku.ca.

LA&PS Seed Grant for Collaborative Research Initiatives

Value: Up to $5,000

Deadlines: September 15 and January 15

LA&PS full-time faculty members are invited to apply for seed funding to build new research collaborations with scholarly and/or community partners by supporting the specific costs associated with bringing key partners together to explore and develop new research and research funding opportunities. These initiatives must involve at least one LA&PS faculty member working with collaborators, who can be faculty or external community members (locally or globally). The funding is designed to offset costs associated with bringing the collaborators together for a preliminary planning meeting or small-scale workshop. YUFA Leave Fellowship Fund (Sabbatical)

Deadline: January 15, 2021

A Leave Fellowship Fund (Article 19.30 of the YUFA Collective Agreement) of $325,000.00 is available to provide peer-adjudicated additional grants of up to 10% of academic base salary to sabbaticants. The grants shall be subject to the conditions set out in Article 20.17 (b) of the YUFA Collective Agreement. See guidelines and application form.

YCAR Canada-China Initiatives Fund

Deadline: January 22, 2021

Founded in 2019, the Canada-China Initiatives Fund (CCIF) administered by York’s Centre for Asian Research (YCAR) was created to support scholarly exchanges and research on modern (i.e. post 1911) and contemporary China, Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan, their global reach, their linkages with Canada, or the experiences of the diaspora communities. The fund was created thanks to the generous support of the Asian Business and Management Program at York University.

Announcement: Ontario COVID-19 Challenge Questions Initiative

The Ontario Ministry of Health has launched the COVID-19 Challenge Questions Initiative outlining key COVID-19 research areas in need of actionable solutions. This initiative aims to accelerate the generation and translation of research and data analytic insights in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Researchers at Ontario-based universities, academic institutions and non-profit organizations are invited to participate. Full details about the Challenge Questions Initiative can be found here.

NSERC now has listed on its website challenges and questions submitted by industry, not-for-profit and public-sector organizations. NSERC encourages university faculty to visit this page and review the opportunities.

Event: AIMday Cybersecurity Event

AIMday Cybersecurity 2021 is a collaboration between Ryerson University, University of Toronto, University of Guelph and York University along with the Rogers Cybersecure Catalyst. It is an opportunity for researchers to connect with companies around their specific research questions in the field of Cybersecurity. Some of the organizations currently in discussion to participate include Rogers, RBC, Microsoft, Sun Life, and the City of Toronto. Their research interests range from the development of new encryption techniques to cybersecurity policy and human behaviour. Register for the AIMday event here

Announcement: Recruitment of members for an Indigenous Leadership Circle in Research

The three federal granting councils and the Canadian Foundation for Innovation (TC3+) are recruiting First Nations, Inuit and Métis Peoples’ members to join the newly created Indigenous Leadership in Research Circle. The Circle will advise and support the TC3+ during the implementation of their joint strategic plan for strengthening Indigenous research capacity.

Membership will be selected in a way that considers sufficient diversity to reflect First Nations, Inuit and Métis Peoples in Canada (including the perspectives of urban, rural, northern, on/off reserve Indigenous Peoples); different levels of experience and expertise (community and academic); breadth across the agencies’ three mandate areas; gender equity; and geography.

Interested individuals are invited to submit an Expression of Interest by January 15, 2021.

SSHRC Impact Awards 2021

Value: $50,000 or $100,000

Faculty internal deadline: January 18, 2021, at 4:00 PM (EST)

Agency Deadline: April 1, 2021

The LA&PS Research Unit is inviting Self-Nominations for the SSHRC Impact Award competition, in the following four categories – Gold Medal, Insight, Partnership and Connection. The Faculty can name a maximum of one (1) nominee per category to forward to VPRI.

For information about the LA&PS internal process, including instructions for completing a self-nomination file, please refer to the LA&PS SSHRC Impact Award CFP memo. Please also refer to the VPRI memo on the Impact Awards, as all nominations approved by the Faculty must be subsequently approved by VPRI according to their own process. SSHRC Connection Grant

Value: $7000 to $25,000 for events, and up to $50,000 for other outreach activities; higher amounts for outreach activities may be considered if well justified

Duration: 1 year

Deadlines:
– Submission to ORS for technical review: January 18, 2021
– Agency deadline: February 1, May 1, August 1, and November 1, 2021, at 8:00 PM (EST)

These grants support workshops, colloquiums, conferences, forums, summer institutes, or other events or outreach activities.  To access an application form and full instructions, log into your SSHRC account.  In most cases, the appropriate application to select is “Connection – Individual.”

SSHRC Joint Initiative for Digital Citizen Research – Connection Grants

Value:
– Events – $7,000 to $25,000
– Outreach Activities – $7,000 to $50,000; higher amounts may be considered if well justified

Duration :1 year

Agency Deadline: Monday, February 1, 2021, at 12:00 (EST)

SSHRC announced the relaunching of the Connection Grants arm of the Initiative for Digital Citizen Research (IDCR), a joint initiative with the Department of Canadian Heritage (PCH). The IDCR aims to develop a better understanding of the impacts of online disinformation in Canada in order to better inform programs and policies, build Canada’s capacity to conduct research on – and related to – countering online disinformation and other related online harms, and help foster a community of researchers engaged with digital citizenship and online disinformation in Canada. It also aims to provide assistance to selected events and outreach activities for short-term, targeted knowledge mobilization initiatives.

Partnership Engage Grants

Value: $7,000 to $25,000

Duration: 1 year

Agency Deadline:  March 15, June 15, September 15, and December 15, 2021, at 8:00 PM (EST)

These grants provide short-term and timely support for partnered research activities that will inform decision-making at a single partner organization from the public, private or not-for-profit sector. The small-scale, stakeholder-driven partnerships supported through Partnership Engage Grants are meant to respond to immediate needs and time constraints facing organizations in non-academic sectors. OCE/NSERC Partnership – Voucher for Innovation and Productivity (VIP) Program

Value and Duration (1:1 cash matching from the Industry Partner is required):
– NSERC and OCE can provide $20,000 – $30,000 each
– Industry Partner provides $20,000 – $30,000 each (at least half must be spent at the academic institution)

Deadlines: While OCE is accepting VIP applications on a rolling basis, they are encouraging applicants to submit by 30 January 2020 in order to be considered in the 2019-2020 fiscal year

Ontario Centres of Excellence (OCE) recently announced a new partnership stream with the NSERC relating to the Voucher for Innovation and Productivity (VIP) Program.  This opportunity allows researchers to access NSERC (Alliance or Engage), Mitacs (Accelerate) and OCE (VIP) through a single application process.

NSERC Call for Proposals: Collaborative Research and Training Experience (CREATE) Program

Value and Duration: $1.65 Million over 6 years

Agency Deadlines:
– Phase 1: Letter of Intent (LOI)  – Due May 3, 2021
– Phase 2: Full Application (by invitation only) – Due September 22, 2021

CREATE initiatives provide a value-added experience to the university training environment that includes the development of professional skills among students and postdoctoral fellows that complement their qualifications and technical skills, with a focus on providing an enriched training experience for graduate students. For examples of successful CREATE programs, please review the list of competition results. The CREATE program has permitted York University a yearly quota of 4 LOIs, and only those researchers selected by York can submit LOIs.

Researchers planning to submit an application to the CREATE program (Phase 1: Letter of Intent) must first submit an internal Notice of Intent (iNOI). The iNOIs are due no later than March 18, 2021, by email to Maheen Hasan (mhasan@yorku.ca).

NSERC – Alliance Grants: Option 2

Value: over $30,000 to $100,000 per year

Duration: 1 to 5 years

Deadline: No deadline

NSERC has released details about a new Alliance Option 2 two-pager that provides an overview of what the NSERC Alliance Option 2 funding is all about. The projects should aim to address and are driven by an unmet societal need, meaning that the results matter not just to the partner organizations but also to the public. The results should be broadly shared in various formats, allowing even non-specialists outside the project to understand and use the results. Read the two-pager in English or in French here.

CIHR Funding Opportunities

A list of funding opportunities through CIHR can be found on this page of the agency’s website. Please be attentive to any COVID-19 update that appears as part of the posting for specific opportunities. Due to the large volume of RFAs, the Office of Research Services has created a simplified Excel spreadsheet that will make it easier for researchers to locate the funding call that is most appropriate to their research area. You will be required to enter your Passport York user ID and password for YU Link to gain access to the spreadsheet. Alternatively, you may contact ORS at research@yorku.ca to send you the file as an attachment.

Mitacs Accelerate Program – Indigenous Call

Value: Minimum of $10,000 for a 4-month project

Duration: Minimum of 4 months

Agency Deadline: Friday, January 29, 2021

Mitacs is currently seeking proposals for its Accelerate Program to support Indigenous businesses. Mitacs-Accelerate is a graduate research internship program that connects graduate students and post-docs in any discipline at Canadian Universities with companies through short to medium-term research projects which address a company’s need.

Mitacs Elevate Program – Call for Proposals

Value: Elevate fellows receive:
– $55,000 minimum annual stipend/salary (for fellowships awarded after April 1, 2018)
– Training curriculum valued at $7,500 per year
– Submission assistance, including application feedback, from Mitacs representatives
– Certificate of completion after receipt of their exit survey and final report submission

Duration: 2 years

Agency Deadline: Wednesday, February 10, 2021, by 5:00 PM (PST)

Mitacs is currently seeking proposals for its Elevate Program, a postdoctoral fellowship with a customized research management training component. Fellows address complex challenges through: An exclusive research management curriculum for postdoctoral fellows in any discipline; A minimum one-year research project (normally two years in duration) with a partner organization in need of high-level expertise; and a Partner Organization Business Case, developed to outline project objectives, risks, and stakeholder success criteria, and ensure project value.

Mobilizing Insights in Defence and Security (MINDS) Collaborative Networks – Call for Proposals

Value: $250,000 per year

Duration: 3 years

Agency Deadline: Monday, January 18, 2021, by 11:59 PM (PST)

The Department of National Defense and the Canadian Armed Forces (DND/CAF) is looking for individuals or organizations that are engaged, dynamic, resourceful and interested in helping them address key defence policy challenges. The objective of the call is to: seek multi-disciplinary research networks with diverse groups of experts from across Canada and internationally, to work together on specific defence policy challenges; drive innovation in defence policy thinking and to foster the next generation of defence and security experts; and support the exchange of a diversity of researchers in the domain of security and defence.

Association of Commonwealth Universities – Commonwealth Peace and Reconciliation Challenge Grants

Value: Up to GBP 2,500

Duration: 6 to 12 months

Agency Deadline: Friday, January 15, 2021, 11:59 PM (UTC)

The Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU) recently launched the Commonwealth Peace and Reconciliation Challenge Grants. The objective is to support initiatives advancing peace, reconciliation and Indigenous knowledge.  Aimed at academic and professional staff, the grants support collaborative work focused on either of the two main strategic priorities of the Commonwealth Peace and Reconciliation Network: Historical memory or trauma; And Institutional reform/Indigenous knowledge. The grants can be used for a diverse range of projects, workshops and events.

Residencies in CollEx-Persée Libraries

Value: Maximum 50,000 Euros

Duration: 1 year

Agency deadline: January 10, 2021

This call for projects offers the possibility for a library of the CollEx-Persée network and a researcher whose research concerns a particular collection held by this library to work together to enhance the value of this collection. The researcher will be hosted in residence by the library in order to develop knowledge of and access to the collection, to design projects to enhance the scientific value of the collection and/or to prefigure enriched digitization projects.

Ontario Agri-Food Research Initiative – 2020/21 Call for Research Proposals

Value: Up to $150,000 per project

Duration: 19 months (Projects must end by January 2023)

Agency Deadline: Friday, January 8, 2021, by 2:00 pm (EST)

The Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (OMAFRA) has issued the 2020/21 Call for Research Proposals for the Ontario Agri-Food Research Initiative. This initiative is jointly funded by the federal and provincial governments under the Canadian Agricultural Partnership.  The objective is to fund demand-driven research that can support agri-food policy, programs or the marketplace; Improve knowledge or technology to help Ontario’s agri-food sector businesses address challenges; Help agri-food businesses expand market opportunities locally and globally. Research priorities for the current call for proposals are: Food Safety; Plant health and protection; Sustainable Production Systems.

2021 ANSER-ARES Conference Call for Papers

The Association for Nonprofit and Social Economy Research (ANSER) brings together leading academic researchers, students, practitioners, consultants, policymakers and community organizations from Canada and across the world to discuss current and emergent issues, debates and challenges in the fields of civil society, social economy, and nonprofit research and practice. This year’s conference theme, Northern Relations, aims to connect researchers with community and to support partnerships for shared knowledge exchange. Proposal abstracts, in either official language, should be submitted here.
