CIHR Revises Definition of Early Career Researcher
Researchers applying to CIHR who fall into the category of “Early Career Researcher” are advised that the agency has made an adjustment to the language around leaves. The text now reads: “all eligible leaves (e.g. maternity, parental, medical, bereavement) are credited as twice the amount of time taken.”
NSERC Update re: Early Career Researchers
While the COVID-19 pandemic has affected all aspects of the research enterprise in many ways, NSERC recognizes that the pandemic has disrupted early career researchers (ECRs) particularly acutely. NSERC would therefore like to share changes to the Early Career Research (ECR) definition. The ECR eligibility window previously increased from 3 years to 5 years to harmonize with the other agencies. The five-year window for being considered an ECR is adjusted to take into account instances where a researcher has had an eligible delay in research. Beginning this year, all eligible leaves (e.g. maternity, paternity, medical, bereavement) will now be credited twice the amount of time taken and the window will be adjusted accordingly. Delays in research activity related to the COVID-19 pandemic will also be considered eligible and should be described clearly in an application. If you have any questions about the changes to the ECR definition, do not hesitate to contact NSERC at resgrant@nserc-crsng.gc.ca.
NSERC Guidelines for Impact of COVID-19 on Research
NSERC has developed general guidelines for the consideration of COVID-19-related impacts on research aiming to provide direction on how to describe these impacts in an application and information on how to consider these impacts when reviewing contributions to research and training and/or research and training plans.
NSERC Project Opportunities Related to COVID-19 Pandemic
NSERC now has listed on its website challenges and questions submitted by industry, not-for-profit and public-sector organizations. NSERC encourages university faculty to visit this page and review the opportunities.
Canadian Research and Development Classification Launched
On October 5, 2020, Statistics Canada launched the Canadian Research and Development Classification (CRDC). This new standard will provide a common language for discussing and categorizing research activities and investments in Canada. It will serve as the recommended classification system for the research and development community, including government and higher education.
The CRDC system was jointly developed by Statistics Canada, the Canada Foundation for Innovation, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada, and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada, and in consultation with the Office of the Chief Science Advisor. The agencies benefitted from valuable input from Canada’s research and development community.
