Linguistics Student Wins LA&PS Best DARE Poster Award

The Linguistics program in the Department of Languages, Literatures and Linguistics would like to congratulate Olivia Carstensen, a recent graduate of the Linguistics program, who has been selected by LA&PS as the recipient of the Best Poster Award for 2024 for her DARE poster, “Exploring Turkic Vowel Harmony”, completed in the summer of 2024 under the supervision of Professor Emeritus Peter Avery as part of the DARE project initiative.

The LA&PS DARE Poster and Celebration Event was held on October 8, 2024 in the Scott Library Collaboratory, where the award was announced publicly. Ms. Carstensen received a certificate and a $300 gift certificate from Dean McMurtry.

Ms. Carstensen shared the following words about her experience in the Linguistics Program and DARE:

I had a wonderful experience with linguistics at York. The faculty are so knowledgeable, passionate, and supportive, and the range of courses trains students to analyze language from many perspectives. The DARE program made possible my participation in hands-on linguistic research under the guidance of a mentor, which enhanced my overall experience in the department.
