Are you fascinated by how language is learned? Or how experts evaluate and treat language disorders? 

Just one of three of its kind offered across Canada, our program gives you a solid understanding of speech and language sciences, and an appreciation for the extraordinary work happening in the sector right now. You get in-depth knowledge of linguistics and its relation to language disorders. And you learn the process of diagnosis and treatment of speech, language and communication disorders.

Study alongside instructors who are nationally and internationally known for their scholarship, engaged advocacy and excellence in teaching. You also have the unique opportunity for hands-on learning through relevant work placements and co-ops in this exciting field.

What you’ll learn 


  • Gain critical skills in the research, understanding and treatment of speech, language and communication disorders.
  • Learn how to evaluate research findings in speech and language sciences.
  • Gain an appreciation for the complexity of human language, how it develops from infancy through to adulthood, and how it is processed by the brain.

Hands-on experiences 


  • Gain practical experience in the field of communications disorders through coursework and volunteer placements.
  • Attend our department lecture series to learn about cutting-edge research from world-renowned scholars in linguistics and speech sciences.
  • Access co-op opportunities to gain paid work experience.

Upcoming Events


Speech and Language Sciences combines aspects of traditional linguistics with psychology, biology and kinesiology - and applies this knowledge to clinical issues related to disorders of speech, hearing and other language problems that one might encounter. This program is geared toward students intending to pursue postgraduate work in areas such as speech pathology and audiology.
