eClass Training


Please note this training is available to LA&PS faculty only.


We offer a number of training sessions for all LA&PS instructors using eClass. You can find out more information about what to expect from and how to book a live training session below. Related training resources will also be shared on this page as they become available.

Training Sessions

This introductory workshop provides an overview of how to use your eClass course page(s) using the default format. At the end of this workshop, participants will leave with the ability to:

  1. Upload content;
  2. Create and organize weekly/topic course format;
  3. Employ Resources & Activities (including linking to useful internal and external sites such as MLA, CMS or e-Journals);
  4. Activate Forums (Discussions & Announcements);
  5. Use analytical tools and understand their benefits for example: the progress bar, completion tracking, activity reports, course participation reports and course logs.

Duration 1.5 -2 hours

If you would like to stay for another 30 minutes we will dedicate some "hands on helpfor your Resource Management. At this brief session, you will learn how to employ specific eClass resources such as:

  • File (PPT, PDF, DOC, XLS),
  • URL (link to videos, permalinks, web links),
  • Page (include hypertext links and embeds),
  • Folder (multiple files and subfolders),
  • Label (heading/divider used to organize info within weekly unit), and
  • Book (organize multiple manuscripts within Table of Content and navigation buttons).

You will learn the specific advantages of choosing the file to be opened in an independent window or tab, versus just being opened, or being forced to download.

Many teaching assistants use eClass to provide support to the instructors of the course. Learn to use common tools from a TA perspective, not necessarily setting up eClass tools but focusing on how to use them to support student online activities such as course announcements within your tutorials, grading turn-it-in assignments and adding grades to the Moodle gradebook.

Would you like to learn to create course pages that are visually pleasing without compromising functionality? Organize course materials so that they are easily accessible but limit cognitive overload for students?

This training will demonstrate changing layouts to best fit your course design, delivery and learner needs. Participants will learn to format their courses using 5 format types including topics, weekly, collapsible, grid and menu/tab layouts, as well as understand the key features, benefits and skills required for each of these layout types.

This resource based training session focuses on effective strategies for managing courses with high student enrollment using eClass. We'll explore the challenges and concerns from both instructor and student perspectives, offering practical eLearning solutions to enhance the learning experience.

Topics will include streamlining course design for scalability and fostering student engagement in large virtual classrooms as well as a brief discussion on best practices for communication and content delivery in large courses.

By the end of this session, you will gain valuable insights and tips to enhance your course management, ensuring a positive and productive experience for both you and your students.

This training session will explore the capabilities of Panopto and Zoom for lecture recording and delivery, providing you with the knowledge to choose the right tool for your specific needs. We'll compare these platforms, focusing on their strengths in synchronous and asynchronous delivery, ease of use, and editing and sharing functionality.

The session will include a practical demonstration of the setting up both Zoom and Panopto within eClass, ensuring you can seamlessly integrate these tools into your course environment. We'll also address common troubleshooting issues.

By the end, you'll understand how to effectively use these tools to enhance your instructional delivery and manage recordings efficiently.

Duration 2 hours

Would you like to host meaningful interactive collaboration between students and instructor, or between students? Learn how to utilize discussion forums, announcements, messaging and chats. This workshop will provide a hands-on session using these ever-growing methods of communication. You will review the different types of forums and their advantages. Do you wish to divide your class into small groups permanently throughout the term, or do you wish to rotate flexible groups each time? You will learn how to determine when you need groups versus groupings. You can auto-create random small groups or manually create pre-set groups. In addition, you will also learn how to facilitate forums for both permanent and flexible groupings throughout the term.

Duration 1.5 -2 hours

Join us for an engaging session where we will explore various types of assessments and address common challenges instructors face in their implementation on eClass. Participants will learn how to select the appropriate eClass tools that align with their course learning goals and meet the diverse needs of learners.

Additionally, we will discuss effective strategies for providing constructive feedback, including a practical demonstration on creating rubrics for both assignments and Turnitin. This training aims to empower participants with the skills to effectively leverage eClass assessment tools, ultimately enhancing both teaching and students' learning experiences.

At this session you will not only create a quiz with its unique settings; but, you will also build individual Multiple Choice, True/False and Essay type questions. Learn how to create categories and move questions to the default category so that your question bank can be accessed from your related courses. You will also learn how to administer random questions from specific categories. If necessary, we will demonstrate how multiple choice questions can be imported into the question bank using the Aiken method and how questions from one or more categories can be exported using different formats. Best practices concerning accommodating special needs students, the deterrence of cheating using quiz settings such as the timing of quiz, or the timely releasing of correct answers also will be discussed.

IMPORTANT: This training is highly recommended for instructors using quizzes in eClass to ensure a seamless quiz experience for their students.

Unlock the full potential of eClass Gradebook in this dynamic and interactive training session. Discover how this tool can streamline your grading process, keep you organized, and provide students with real-time insights into their progress.

Learn to create offline activity assignments, grade directly from activities (Assignments, Turnitin, etc.), and let eClass calculate course totals for you. Identify struggling students early, provide students with a private view of their grades, helping them stay informed, and export grades to Excel for easy grade upload (GAM).

Join us to simplify your grading tasks, enhance student engagement, and ensure a smooth end-of-semester grade submission. Get ready to transform your grading experience!

Welcome to our beginner-friendly H5P tutorial session! In this workshop, we'll introduce you to H5P, a simple yet powerful tool for creating interactive content, and show you how to use it within eClass.

During this session, you'll learn the following:

  1. Navigate to eClass Course
    • Log in to your eClass account
    • Select the course where you want to add H5P content
  2. Access the Content Bank
  3. Explore H5P Activities
  4. Learn about different H5P activities such as:
    • Drag and Drop Words: Design activities where students drag words to the correct spots
  5. Create H5P Activities in eClass
  6. Select the type of H5P activity you want to create
  7. Follow the prompts to design and customize your activity
  8. Learn about key settings for each H5P activity, such as:
    • Grading Options: Understand which activities can be graded
    • Embedding Options: Know how to embed activities that cannot be graded
  9. Differentiate Between Graded and Embedded Activities:
    • Recognize that some activities can be graded (only using the activity itself)
    • Understand that embedded activities cannot be assigned grades

Learn how to create, award, and manage badges in Moodle to recognize achievements, motivate learners, and foster a sense of accomplishment. By the end of this session, you will have practical strategies to implement badges effectively, transforming your classroom into a vibrant and rewarding learning environment.

eLearning Services holds eClass Drop-in Virtual Support on Mondays 11 a.m. to 12 noon and Fridays at 1 to 2 p.m. for the hour. LA&PS instructors/TA's can connect online to talk with our eLearning tech staff, for eClass questions, assistance and quick help items.

Important: Please try to connect early in the hour if you need assistance for at least 15 minutes, as running over the hour impacts the support schedule.  

The drop-in support will be open for the one hour and each support session lasts about 15 minutesIf you need more than 15 minutes of support, we offer one-to-one appointments to help with any complex eClass issues. For these appointments please email esohelp@yorku.ca.
