AP/FR 0130 6.00
Elementary French
The objective of this course is to give students who have completed Grade 10 FR, or equivalent, the opportunity to upgrade their skills while rethinking their academic and career goals. This course is designed to consolidate and expand the basic language skills in the following four areas: listening, speaking, reading and writing. It is organized around the systematic presentation of grammar, simple syntax and vocabulary in the context of practical situations. The course also provides students with the opportunity to practice speaking skills and gain confidence in oral communication through regular small-group activities and role playing (for instance describing people, seeking information, reporting on local news); students will also have the opportunity to work on pronunciation. Listening comprehension is developed through listening exercises based on conversations between native speakers.
On completion of the course, students should:
- have increased their understanding of spoken French in practical topics;
- have gained confidence to be able to sustain general conversations and express their opinions on the practical aspects of their personal and academic lives;
- have consolidated their knowledge of the basic structures of the French language;
- be able to read short texts and have expanded their basic vocabulary;
- be able to write accurately using the range of grammatical structures studied.
