The Francophone World: Contemporary Issue

This course explores the Francophone world (la Francophonie) from a linguistic, cultural, political and economic point of view. The course will cover topics related to language and identity, language status, cultural assimilation etc. in French-speaking countries in Asia, Arica and the West-Indies. It will introduce students to the historical circumstances of the establishment of the OIF and have them reflect on the political future of the OIF in a context of internationalization. It examines the issues currently confronting French-speaking communities and countries as well as the actions taken by various government and international organizations (e.g. l’Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie) in response to these issues.

Prerequisite: AP/FR 2100 6.00 with a minimum grade of C and AP/FR 2082 3.00. Course credit exclusions: None.
